As of this week, I'm the proud owner of a 1953ish 3 1/2" S&W .357 Magnum 5-screw(aka the "Pre-27"). I've been looking for one of these for about a year and a half and have been outbid or otherwise thwarted from getting one until now.

It shows some honest wear, which I prefer. I did not want a pristine one, I wanted a shooter. And damn does this thing shoot! The DA pull is smooth and fairly light, single action is extremely crisp. I found myself grouping better with this right away than I think any other new-to-me revolver besides my 4" M19. The only issue I found was that it was out of time. It didn't seem to have a problem during use, but when you dragged a thumb on the cylinder, it was out enough to have me replace the hand already. Times perfectly now :)

I think it must have been stored in a cardboard box or more likely a leather holster for years as the inside was covered in this brown fibrous material. Very weird. Didn't seem to effect operation, the action was very smooth.

I'm calling it my "Little Big Gun". It's not very large, but it's heavy and solid. The cylinder walls and forcing cone are massive. This thing should be able to withstand some hearty loads if I chose to go that route.

The only thing I do not like about it is the serrated trigger. I know most of them had them back then, but I do not like them at all. After only about 70 or 80 rounds, I found a blister was forming on the bottom of my trigger finger. I'll have to build up a callous so I can enjoy this more!

Anyway, on to the pix!!!

Here it is with the original, numbers matching grips that some previous owner sanded completely smooth:

These are some era-correct magna grips that I'll keep on it so that it looks proper:

I know a lot of people do not like target grips on 3 1/2" barrels, but I do prefer the feel over the smaller magnas. I have larger hands and these fit better. Unfortunately, these particular grips are some fairly unattractive ones from the mid-80s. I'll eventually get a pair of era-correct target grips or something similar to the new repro grips pictured on the M21 below:

This is a group shot of it hanging with some other blue/wood N Frame buddies, the M21 .44 Spl and an early 1917 .45 ACP:

Finally, a nice group shot of (mostly) older blue Smiths, including my other "grail gun", the C series 2" M&P 5-screw.
Top row: M21 4", M&P 2", M19 4"
Bottom row: 1917 5.5", Pre-27 3.5", M&P 4"

I have been looking for exactly that same gun, or at least the same model in the same condition. Congrats on a great find. Hope to be as lucky one day soon.

Why don't you swap out a smooth trigger? Take the original and store it away of course. Just make sure you tag it with the serial number.

Thanks everyone!! I'm still in a bit of disbelief about actually getting one after looking for so long. This was the first of the "really collectable" older Smiths I have other than the 1917, which was a random lucky find at a gun show. I have a few more M&Ps than pictured above and while they seem desirable, the bidding is not as competitive on them as there are so many more available. The .357s and .44s from the '50s seem to be in much higher demand. In my experience, you either have to suck it up and pay more than you think you should or hope for another one to come along. I think I got extremely lucky as I was the only bidder on this one :)

Would like to see a little more about that "C" Series. Are you meaning the Model 73?

The 2" M&P (Pre-10) pictured is from the early '50s and has a C prefix serial #, so I call it a C series. Not sure that is the proper term for it. I have ones with no letter prefix, S prefix and C prefix so I use the term "series" to distinguish them in my mind.

Hmmm, that had not even occurred to me as I thought all of these had serrated triggers. If I come across a smooth one, I would very serious consider doing that. Thanks for the idea!!

get a jinxs letter for it no tellin its history enjoy they really buck with full house 357 mags but fun

Indeed, that is on my list of things to do with this gun. I've considered it for some of my M&Ps as well. While I'm at it, I should get one for the 1917 as well. I know it's an early model, but it'd be good to know exactly how early.

Oh, question for you guys that are much more knowledgeable about this model than I. Is the pin that protrudes from the front of the barrel lug sticking out too far and needs fixing or is it fine as is?

Hi guys. I'm bumping this to see if anyone can answer the question I asked in the post above about whether the pin sticking out the barrel lug is something that needs to be fixed or if it's ok as is.
I've never taken that part of a Smith apart before so I'm not sure what correct or not. I have not seen other guns with them poking out that far, hence the concern.
Thanks!!

Is your ejector rod screwed in all the way and NOT cross threaded? I don't guess it really is a problem but I haven't seen one stick out that far before.Nick

Sabago son and others, can you post pics of your 3&1/2" 27s and pre 27s front on? I'm looking at a very nice "pre-27" that the front of the ejector rod shroud looks more rounded than any "S" framed pistols I have ever seen before.I hate to call it re-finnished since the rest of the gun doesn't look to over polished, but still, I wonder. Thanks, Nick

I've not checked, but I didn't notice anything out of place at the star and there certainly isn't any binding happening. I'll have to check when I get home from work.
