A 29-2 to be exact. I really wanted an 8 3/8" Model 27 or maybe a 29 with nickel finish. Then this gorgous chunk of steel came up for sale locally. I buy it Friday then wait ten days. These guns can't come into California so we all have to fight over what's already here, which drives prices up. I bought it with these wrong grips for $825. I have a pair of Kuraks waiting for it. Also a pair of 1979 Targets.
After watching Dirty Harry in 1971 when I was 14 I can't believe I finally got around to getting a S&W .44 Magnum.

congratulations on purchasing the sweet looking Nickel Model 29 with 8 3/8 barrel. I picked up a blued version of the same gun that is a 98% revolver and it's beautiful revolver also. Kurac makes fabulous grips and you will love those also.

Nice matt! Wish we knew each other when I still lived in california. I sold a identical one I had bought new many years ago. Somewhere I have a old guns and ammo magazine showing me laying on my gut like a beached whale shooting it in maybe the first silhouett shoot in california with colonel jeff cooper watching me. Think I sold it for $500s to a friend when I left there about 7 years ago.

When I first got "into" guns, it wasn't long before I had acquired a model 29, a model 57, and a model 27 - all 3 with 8 & 3/8" barrels, all 3 nickel, all 3 with the 3 T's, and all 3 in the presentation cases.

Being young and fickle, I soon decided there were things I wanted more and went to a shop where I knew the old guy loved Smith & Wessons and had a lot of guns that had been in inventory for some time.

I walked out of that place with a rifle, a shotgun and enough handguns to fill up the back seat of the car for an even-up trade. Included was a S&W 9mm, a Colt Commander, a couple of High Standards, a Ruger 22, a Winchester, and a Remington, and maybe one or two more I don't readily recall. As of this date, don't have a single one of those left that I traded for - I still know where a couple of them are since friends traded me out of them, but for something else that's probably gone down the road as well.

Now, I kinda wish I'd have hung on to the original set . . . . :(

Nice piece, especially for Kalifornistan.

Congrats. That's a beauty. The Libtards have ruined Cali for shooters. Condolences........

Nice score. Passed on a lesser gun (same model & finish, not as nice a condition) with zero goodies at the same price awhile back. Your's is a real beauty!

I've also caught the .44 Magnum bug from a friend's 629. I'm wanting me a Dirty Harry, tho. :D

Yup. We pay a premium on S&W here. :(

Mighty Fine

She's a beauty, I recently got a 629-6 5" it is a blast shooting these bad boys:cool:

That's a good price on that, with all the goodies, too. My nickel 6.5" cost me $100.00 more in Florida.

beautiful, we want a range report and more pics. Looks just like my 6" only 2 3/8" longer.

Why can't they come into California?

handguns here in the peoples republic can not be imported for sale either new or used to a dealer unless they have been deemed "safe" by the grandees in Sacramento (yes, brought to you by those same group of clowns that have driven us off over the insolvency cliff) anyway for a gun to be sold new or imported it must have been submitted in triplicate to the state for a safety drop test, in all variations of finish, caliber and barrel length. PPT between current state residents and single actions are exempt so the 29-2 as Matts lovely example is long out of production by S&W so for a guy in any other state to sell it to a PRK resident is verboten, but if you can find one for sale and agree on a price you can buy it. they rub is say the 29-2 was still in production by S&W and they only submitted 4 and 6 inch blue versions to the state for "safety" testing, the 8 3/8th one shown would still be a no go even if it were a current production item..

see our frustration yet ? this leads to price increases on out of production guns but not yet C&R guns. a 500 gun 100 miles away from Matt in Reno (and 48 other free states) may well be a $800 gun in PRK, just becuase of the will of the state.

then of course there is the C&R discussion. while technically legal to import 50+ year old handguns, from out of state the state rules are so byzantine that very few FFL are willing to accept old guns unless SPECIFICALLY named on the ATF C&R list. elmer keith 29-2 commemorative for example
even though its the same blasted gun as the one shown in this thread
clear as mud yet ? certain exemptions apply for family gifts and inheritances, additional paperwork applies

ok. ran't done.

range report and a fancy piece of your leather is expected shortly :)

Congratulations. We never forget our first! Mine was an 8 3/8" Nickel as well. Bought it from a private seller, middle 1970's or so, paid $350 if I remember correctly. Long gone now, but many have taken it's place.
