Finally! My First S&W Model 29! A Real Shiney One!

handguns here in the peoples republic can not be imported for sale either new or used to a dealer unless they have been deemed "safe" by the grandees in Sacramento (yes, brought to you by those same group of clowns that have driven us off over the insolvency cliff) anyway for a gun to be sold new or imported it must have been submitted in triplicate to the state for a safety drop test, in all variations of finish, caliber and barrel length. PPT between current state residents and single actions are exempt so the 29-2 as Matts lovely example is long out of production by S&W so for a guy in any other state to sell it to a PRK resident is verboten, but if you can find one for sale and agree on a price you can buy it. they rub is say the 29-2 was still in production by S&W and they only submitted 4 and 6 inch blue versions to the state for "safety" testing, the 8 3/8th one shown would still be a no go even if it were a current production item..

see our frustration yet ? this leads to price increases on out of production guns but not yet C&R guns. a 500 gun 100 miles away from Matt in Reno (and 48 other free states) may well be a $800 gun in PRK, just becuase of the will of the state.

then of course there is the C&R discussion. while technically legal to import 50+ year old handguns, from out of state the state rules are so byzantine that very few FFL are willing to accept old guns unless SPECIFICALLY named on the ATF C&R list. elmer keith 29-2 commemorative for example
even though its the same blasted gun as the one shown in this thread
clear as mud yet ? certain exemptions apply for family gifts and inheritances, additional paperwork applies

ok. ran't done.

range report and a fancy piece of your leather is expected shortly :)
An excellent explanation of our situation, except for one thing. While you were writing it we don't know what new laws have been enacted. The guys who write the laws know no manufacturer will do the drop tests on guns they no longer make because gun companies want you to buy new ones from them. Like a new S&W 29-87 or whatever with a lock rather than a late 70's gun from a private party. You know when you throw a chunk of fish food into a domestic pond and all the fish fight over it? Well, that's what guns like this are to us. And like El Toro said. If they did a drop test for a certain blue gun they have to do another test for the identical gun with a factory parkerized finish. If they can't ban it they'll discourage it or make it too expensive. Get the scam?
I have to go now. They are passing out toilet paper, old meat, and vodka and I have to go get in line.
