Howdy friends!
I've been watching these since they first came out several months ago and after scanning the two threads here, decided to pull the trigger and get one. Thanks to ED, I contacted Summit and picked this one along with its original PD-blue plastic case. I plan to take it to the range for a box of ammo before stripping it down completely for cleaning and some minor stoning on the rails and trigger/hammer contacts for smoothness, and I mean minor. I even found a slightly used CHP black grip on fleabay to restore it to SWAT. Hope you enjoy!
Thanks, Dave :D

Man....other than the appearance of the grips, that gun looks just about brand new! I might have to give these a second look.

So far, so good. I will need a new slide stop though. Someone ground the tip down so it barely catches on an empty mag. It's actually ground! Minor problem. Weird.

Hey Dave, cool gun and a real workhorse. The all steel 4006 eats up the .40 S&W round… but I don’t think that yours is an actual CHP gun. Mine has the integral rail built into the frame and has a CHP serial number and markings. Perhaps yours is an LE or private security contract gun?

Thank you. If you scroll down in the Semi-Auto section to a thread titled "Police trade-in 4006TSW, you'll read what their armorer reported about these pistols. Pretty cool.

Dave, I'm sure you'll be happy with that pistol. Mine was fairly clean inside, and only a few spots of corrosion under the grips and in the mag well. Fun shooters! A question, though; was yours drilled for the rail rivets? mine has the rail, and I was just curious if they all started out that way.

Very nice! I picked up one of the CHP 4006TSWs a few years ago, it was my personal grail gun which I was extremely satisfied to add to my collection.

Obviously, this wasn't a training model though, it was actually issued.

I have my pistol's original PD blue plastic box and peeling back one of the added stickers, on the factory tag it reads: Fired case enclosed. I'm guessing that's another point it ended up in Kalifornia to begin with?

Great pickup Dave! Think the grip's blue paint could be removed with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar? If not at least you have the other grip.

Added: I've heard good things about Summit. How did the selection process work? Did they pick the best condition one for you or did you get to see in person and pick?

Thanks, Todd. Yes, I'll keep the blue grip in the box, but will put the new-to-me CHP black on it.

Getting a hold of Summit is tough. They only answered after I sent a few emails. But the great thing is, Ed suggested I ask them for a pic and they sent those four of this gun! I didn't think they would do it, but they did. I didn't ask for pics of some guns, just one, and got very lucky I think. Ed even suggested getting one without the added rail, and this is the first (only) one they sent! Win. Win. Once you get a hold of them, I went through Christina, all went very smooth. Nice outfit, maybe not enough help? Dunno. Good luck!

If I remember correctly from the related posts, these were bought by CHP circa 10/2002 and put in for Evaluation and/or early tactical use, then relegated to training use after the integral rail CHP s/n order circa 2007. That may explain why there are both versions with and without the attached rail. And in answer to another post, the non railed version are not drilled for rails.

I just found a website that is selling the used red-based 40cal. mags and they say the mags are from a CHP contract. He sells some stuff on fleabay too, so seems to be okay. His website is Ibuyitright. I don't particularly like the red ones, but since my pistol from Summit came with one, I'm going to add another to the box. I'll probably be ordering today. (If MrsB is okay with it!)

Thanks John!!!! Hope your summer is going okay.

I bought my CHP 4006 from Ibuyitright 3 years ago when he had probably 100+ listed for sale on Gunbroker. I clicked each one and viewed every pic until I found the ones I thought were in the best shape, then even picked a serial number that floated my boat. Now he has maybe a dozen for sale and prices have doubled.

I think the red based magazines were designated for CHP range use. I would trust any 3rd Gen .40 mags of his to be from CHP.

Rob @ iBuyItRight is a great guy. Like Todd I got my CHP from him three years ago but emailed him instead of bidding. I received a perfect example, ($599.00,) with even the grip appearing new. Wow Ex + was written on the box and it is.

Before that I got a bunch of new and as new 4013TSW and 4006 magazines. He was and maybe still is training his assistants so sometimes things are either not labeled or miss marked. I emailed him about some 3913 magazines I wanted to bid on but were incorrectly labeled and “too cheap.” I felt obligated to tell him. He said bid on them and if I won to let him know what they actually were. I did and I did.

I have bought from same source, both pistols and mags - always good to deal with.

As to red vs black base and blue vs black grips, I would change over to black base if you are going to standard black grips (available straight or curved from Midway and other sources), but if you are staying with blue grips, the red base would seem correct.

As I understood the red base magazines - that was a standard (not unique to CHP) way of tracking training standard caliber mags to protect the duty mags. When an officer checked in to range he set his duty mags aside and used the red base mags in his duty weapon for training.

But perhaps the more interesting question is what mags were used to feed the 9mm Simmunition rounds in the 4006TSW pistols that were so configured.

Some of the red base blue follower mags i have seen also have a red ink or paint mark on front of the mag. Was told that meant they were checked to be "Drop Free" but ???

To me a more significant discriminator would be the blue follower as opposed to the earlier yellow follower and the AccuGlide markings on the still later mags. And with any used mags check the mag springs - if not full length, replace.

Springs, Baseplates, and Blue Followers are readily available.

I cleaned mine with acetone and a bronze brush, then cleaned up the diamonds with a checkering tool. Sort of regret it now, seeing as new grips are available, but I bought it to use, not collect. I'll keep my CHP 4006TSW as received.
I haven't noted any performance difference between the yellow follower magazines and the blue AccuGlide ones, but then I'm not shooting a thousand rounds a year through them. Just glad that magazines are readily available.

I did order a spare red baseplate mag from Bob yesterday. I shoot a pic when I get it. I just found all the original factory paperwork under the padding in the blue case!! Pretty cool too. No CHP paperwork, just the flyers from Smith.
