Finally start the 10 day DROS on my California Shield

I finally can start the 10 day DROS period on my California Shield. Bought it a month ago but there is a 30 day wait between new handgun purchases here in Democrat California.

After getting it I will be qualifying it as one of my 3 CCW handguns.

Mine is the 9mm version and I have a box of 500 rounds for break-in/familiarization. Any tips besides a) clean it before shooting (I always do that) and b) shoot the heck out of it .... ?

I would clean and lube it before shooting. What ammo do you have? I've read they can be pretty stiff when new. You should shoot good factory ammo first.

Congrats on your soon to be Shield. Keep it clean and do a lot of shooting. Depending on how it feels in your hand, you may want to add something to the grip, or extensions on the mags. I did both, and these two inexpensive things helped me tremendously.

I have several extra magazines for the Shield so I will be able to do a lot of shooting with the Shield once I pick it up.

Will be shooting at FT3 Tactical (Field Time Training/Tactics)

I have a case of good 9mm ammo ready to go.

Congratulations. In Kansas, if you have a Conceal Carry Permit, the entire purchase process takes not more than 5 extra minutes. No waiting and purchase as many as you want. You are not required to qualify with any specific handgun or re-qualify with a new one. Yes, you would probably faint over the simplicity of the situation. I imagine a lot of people in CA would think we are "backwards" in Kansas?

DROS = Dealer Record Of Sale. Why should that take 10 days?

Because that's the law. It supposedly gives the CA DOJ time enough to deny the sale if they find cause to do so. (or just feel like it).

Also, with certain exceptions, we can only buy 1 handgun every 30 days as the OP stated.

I have a non-safety 9mm model on layaway waiting for expiration of my 30 day wait.

Actually... In KS it take 5 extra minutes if one does not have a Concealed Carry License. After the 4473 is filled out a call is required to the ATF for the Instant Check background check. With a CCL no ATF call is required.
No such thing as "high capacity magazines" [AKA low capacity magazines]. No waiting period or monthly limit on handgun purchases and no restrictions on private transfers. KS is Class 3 friendly and hunting is now allowed with a suppressor.
Crime and shootings are still prevalent in the Liberal [big] cities; AKA KCK & KCMO. Go figure. the liberal mayors want more gun control and restrictions apparently so they can be on the same level as Chicago.

Yeah, we kind of know that.

The DROS doesn't take 10 days. It's a waiting period. The NCIS background check is pretty quick.

But it is used as someone pointed out early for you know... messing with us. There's legal action being taken...

The 10 day wait period is some lame-brain politician's reasoning that you will "cool off" your temper and not cause a "crime of passion". Of course, they don't make exceptions for people that are buying their 3rd, 4th, or 50th firearm.

Idiocy doesn't stop in Sacramento, there are some gun ranges that will not rent to you if you are by yourself, even if you have 3 other guns with you. You can shoot those guns yourself, but their reasoning is that if you are there by yourself and you rent one of their guns, you may be doing it so you can kill yourself.

Well, I got my Shield, qualified with it, and it is one of the three guns on my CCW license, along with a Ruger SR40c and a Sig P238. I really like the Shield, it is accurate, fun to shoot, and 100% reliable. S&W got this one right. Mine is the version with the slide safety and loaded chamber indicator and I like having both features.

I carry my Shield as a pocket gun in a jacket pocket in a pocket holster. This setup works fine for me.

Yes speaking as a Californian the gun laws here are difficult. No offense Kansas but this is a great place to leave if you like ocean, skiing, good food, driving, nature, beautiful women and many other terrific things we can enjoy all year round with temperate weather.
Our gun laws suck but we are working on it. The 10 day "DROS" “Dealers Record of Sale” is intended not only for a Cali background check but also a 'cooling off" period. You guys hold the spears back I am just explaining where the DOJ is with this. Here is the rub. As a CR (ATF - Curios and Relics) and a COE (Cali DOJ - Cert of Eligibility) holder we can walk into a gun store and walk out with a CR same day. We can go out of state buy and walk across the Cali boarder with a CR no FFL. The rub: We CR holders are still beholden to a 30 waiting period between roster new "modern manufactured handguns and we are subject to the 10 DROS even with a COE. Why you ask? I leave that one for you to think about
, but I will say one of the reasons they state publicly with the 30 day wait is the belief a modern handgun is more dangerous than a CR.
Calguns filed a lawsuit again the 10 day wait and recently winning the case (I believe it is on appeal).
