Went to range last week near my house outside Houston. Was shooting all pistols. Took a back break, at range for 2-2.5 hours must pace myself. Looked over a couple of bays and there are two younger men there, shooting a revolver rifle. Noticed they are dumping their large pistol rimmed brass on ground. Asked them what they are shooting, answer "45 colt". They said I could have all the empties when done. Turns out they were also shooting nickel plated 38 supers and 45-70 in a different rifle. Came away with (100) 45 Colt, (77) 38 supers and (32) 45-70! Good scrounge day.
Not all was great though. I had a squib load from some suspect powder I bought at a swap meet. It was in open Cardboard can from 1998. I only gave $10 for a pound, Figured I'd give it a try. First round stuck 1" away from end of barrel of my 627-5 4". Took it home, chucked grip frame in vice drilled an 1/8" hole through bullet then pushed it out with 3" punch and pushed the last little bit with a long shanked #1 Philips tipped screwdriver. Bullet pushed very easily, took less time to get it out than to type this thread. As you can see, powder must have had some moisture as it was stuck in a clump behind bullet. The white powder on the tape of the recoil shield is some sheetrock material that was in my "all purpose sheetrock wall / bullet remover Philips punch" Rest of powder from the pound and pulled down bullets is now fertilizing my wifes roses.
