I did a less than pristine job of putting fingernail polish on the front sight of one of my blued pistols. I've tried numerous things that have not worked. I'm guessing acetone is the answer which I do have but am not familiar working with it. My thought is a quick dunk with a Qtip and a little rubbing. Am I on the right track? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Are you married? or have a girlfriend? Borrow a cotton ball and fingernail polish remover from her, it will be gone in literally seconds! Or you could ask her to do it for you, she isn't afraid of the fingernail polish remover like armorer951 apparently is! If it is on a serrated sight you may need a toothbrush or similar to clean the serrations while the polish on the sight is still soft!
Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) works just as well.

Acetone or MEK will remove it. Acetone is good for many dissolving and de-greasing jobs, but keep it away from open flames as it has a low flashpoint.

Just imagine a 40+ year police veteran being frightened of fingernail polish.

Yes sir, Mr. Alk!!! Very dangerous stuff, especially for your eyes.

If you aren't afraid of it then why did you include this remark: "Protect your skin, eyes and lungs during the operation". If it was this bad there are sure a lot of cosmetologists that deal with it every day that must have serious health problems???

The problems with Acetone are in industrial applications that use large volumes in degreasing operations or auto painting or similar.

I guess you're not a label reader?

Oh, I'm definitely afraid of acetone, believe me. I use it all the time.

Just trying to pass the cautions on the fingernail polish remover or acetone container label on to the potential user. Dangerous stuff. More warnings here than in a S&W owner's manual. :D

Avoid prolonged exposure to skin, protect your eyes, do not breath vapors, etc.

Clean the front sight area to be painted with alcohol , nail polish remover , lacquer thinner ... whatever you have .

When clean and dry ... get a BIC White Out Correction Pen .
The white out is flat white lacquer . Use a new pen , shake it well .

Press the tip on a section of sight to be painted , squeese the bulb gently , then press the point down/in to let a little white out flow out ... drag it to put down an even layer ... repeat as needed to cover the sight blade .
A gentle squeeze and a press down will put on one round dot , pull while squeezing will apply an even layer ... practice coloring things first !
Let the White-Out completely dry ... it will self level and smooth out nicely ...but let it completely dry !

The Pen beats a brush application Seven ways to Sunday ...
It last a long time and touch up is easy ... I keep a couple pens in my shooting bag .
To me Flat White shows up best ... but you can use it as a base coat for ant glow-inthe-dark colors or nail polish .

In Indiana you can add some WD-40, pseudoephedrine, lithium batteries and then the neighbors will call the fire dept.

But yeah, nail polish remover is some grade of acetone and will attack plastics and nail polish.

CVS has a nice selection of nail polish and acetone for cleaning.

I just finished some bright triple orange nail polish on some black front sights, minutes ago. It was over bright white nail polish and will be finished by clear.

Black thru black to a black target just disappears into continuous blob of BLACK for me. Orange just leaps out and lets me see that front sight.

I also change which part of the front sight gets the orange. I can then regulate up or down according to need.

This technique has worked dozens of times for me and is inexpensive (pennies).
