I've never used Mother's, but I assume it's about like any other wax. (I use Ren Wax) Apply lightly, let dry, buff lightly. By hand of course. Rinse and repeat as needed.

Nice gun. Enjoy it.

Haven't used Mothers on any firearms, I use Flitz. If it needs a deep clean/polish. Otherwise, I was introduced to Renaissance Wax here, a nice wax job does fine. Remove grips, cylinder & cylinder latch and clean rags. Toothbrush for tight areas & grip panels. Two applications usually gets all the spots you missed the first time.

Looks like you got a great deal with zero competition! Congratulations! Add pics after you get it polished up. I'd clean the barrel & shoot the hooey out of it first though. :D

Sorry but that looks to be more surface damage than Mother's or Flitz will handle. There is some obvious pitting and what appears to be deeper scratches in the finish. I would seriously think about sending it out to Ford's and having it refinished. A dash 3 is not that much of a collectible that I would be concerned about collector value or resale. The grips are also pretty scarred up and those too could be redone or replaced with period correct grips. You could make the entire package look like new.

I saw this one and was considering bidding on it but the corrosion scared me off.

OP, I am sure it will make a fine shooter, and for a good price. Personally, I am not a nickel fan, and I probably would not send it out to be nickel done over. The decision i would make if I were going to refinish it since it is a shooter grade, would be to strip the nickel, and blue the gun. That is just a personal thing, but again nice shooter

Looks like a good range gun! I would polish what you can and shoot it. Picture #35 zoomed in looks like the rear sight blade is cracked.

Looks to me like you got yourself a dandy shooter grade gun there. I would clean up what will clean up and then enjoy shooting it. I'm a nickel finish lover, but S&W is not refinishing in nickel nowadays, so the only other choice I know of that does same quality nickel finishing is Ford's in Florida and they are expensive. If you got to get it refinished, get the nickel stripped and get a nice blue job done on it. As for me, I would run it like it stands now and not worry about damaging the finish.

The finish did scare me some but a cheap Model 27 doesn't come around every day. The rear sight is also buggered with the right side cracked and bent forward, but I was able to find a replacement online. Some people just don't take care of their stuff. But from now on the old girl will get treated right and will have pride of place in my collection. By the way she locks up tight, no end shake and timing is spot on and that is what matters most.

Two advantages to the gun you bought. The price is right and if you get a little careless and scratch it, you won't go home and beat your head on the door jam for scratching a perfect finish. The gun is not ugly and in my opinion is a perfect condition for many years of shooting enjoyment. Some of the ugliest guns I've owned through the years have provided me with some of the most fun.
