Finish Challenged Pre War 38/44 Outdoorsman

Chemical of some kind. Vinegar has been mentioned, and I think ammonia can do the same.

From what I've read, ammonia will damage the modern blued finishes, but it won't hurt the bluing on the older guns like this one.

Everyone's favorite gun cleaner for decades was Hoppes #9 - and it contains ammonia. It wouldn't have been so popular if it damaged bluing.

I *think* S&W specifically cautions against using cleaning products with ammonia, but only on the guns with the "new" blued finish.

I'm not sure what year they changed the bluing process, but I'm sure someone around here does and will chime in with that info.

With all the scratch marks, definitely abrasive involved. My guess is someone used the wrong chemical and an abrasive pad or coarse steel wool. Why they would just keep going is beyond me.

On a positive note, it would be an easy refinish. The imprinted areas are all sharp and in good shape.

It has to be either biological, chemical, or physical.

I'm guessing the last two. Here's why. If one looks closely, there is very minor pitting, then scratches, and splotches. I'm guessing there was minimal surface rust, a chemical was used to remove it, this chemical also removing some finish but not the rust, and physical abrasion occurred when someone tried to remove the rust when the chemical failed to work completely.

Same approach I use when my wife wants the house washed. I use an Outdoor Cleaner to chemically remove dirt, as attached to a hose, the water also physically removes some dirt, and the rest I scrub physically with a brush. Except I'm smart enough to use a brush that won't cause scratches in the vinyl siding.

How much did this revolver cost?

I'm going with chemical, just really don't know what would do it in the way shown. There really is no pitting or scratches in the areas affected. There are minor handling marks but nothing that looks like an abrasive was used in the places where the bluing is affected.

I'm off to the range this morning, maybe I'll take some better pictures of the affected areas later today.

Cost? $1207 all in. Not my worst buy. I think it's going to be a good candidate for an engraving project.
