As an insurance agency owner - I find all the new Gun Liability Insurance talk interesting (and frustrating).

Following is a pretty good article from my monthly Agent & Broker magazine about why the concept is misguided (but of course WE all knew that already). It does offer some helpful information for those without a lot of insurance knowledge though.

That was an excellent article which succintly demonstrated why such proposals wouldn't work in practice. Thank you for posting a link to it.

Aside from the obvious issues of homeowners' policies already covering negligence and that insurance was never meant to protect you from liability as a result of intentional acts, two consequences of this type of legislation that I rarely see addressed are that the average working person living hand to mouth cannot easily afford a real UL burglary-rated safe and they likely wouldn't be able to pay the arbitrary, yet-to-be-determined premiums for perceived "high risk" items either (e.g. AR or AK rifles and firearms without a built-in user safety or locking device).

Suffice to say, mandatory liability insurance for firearms would essentially turn their ownership into a "rich man's hobby." Then again, wasn't social engineering always the name of the game as opposed to a noble and well-intentioned initiative based upon a sincere commitment to public safety?
