Day before yesterday, I had a new experience. After working on my 627-2 and checking the timing, I found the firing pin protruding and remaining stuck!! When I tried removing the firing pin, it would not fall out or pull out or push out. After a few minutes of failed attempts, I found my needle nose pliers and was able to get enough of the back of the pin to pull out.

After cleaning the firing pin race and pin, I tried putting it back in and it was tight. So, I chucked it in the drill and polished it body with some 600 grit wet dry paper. Reinstalled and it slid right in and worked fine.

Shot about 150 rounds through it yesterday and it functioned without a hitch.

Anyone else had such an issue with floating firing pins?

I have a 442 that was light striking the bullet primers every fourth or fifth round causing a failure to fire. When I was cleaning the gun and had it tilted forward I saw that the firing pin was exposed.I was able to push it back in and after taking it apart found that the firing pin was broken when I removed it I found that the firing pin spring was also broken.I replaced both and it has been fine since.I was amazed that it still fired at all with the broken spring and pin.

This is a Cylinder and Slide long firing pin I put in probably close to 15 years ago and has been shot maybe 50,000 rounds, virtually all .38 Special rounds.
I wonder if the body could have been peened just enough not to fit loosely in the race?
