Bought my second 15-22 this past June but wasn't able to get it out to fire until yesterday. My first one functioned perfectly (and still does; my son has it.) With this one, the first three 25 round magazines went flawlessly. The fourth magazine functioned properly for about half the rounds at which time it failed to fire. The unit feeds a cartridge properly when racking the action and ejects properly when racking again. But, the trigger will not fire the round; it does nothing. It feels as though the safety were on but that is not the case. We tried different magazines, checked the safety, racked the action several time but condition remained unchanged. Visual inspection shows everything to apparently be as it should be. It'll be going back to SW tomorrow and I know that they'll take care of it but wondered if any one else had had this particular problem.

Check the pins that hold the trigger assembly in place. My M&P 15-22P did the same thing after about 100 rounds and I thought the worst as well.

Both of the pins for the trigger assembly had walked loose. That let one of the springs swing over and freeze the trigger. I put everything back, made sure the pins were well seated and have had no more trouble for about 1500 rounds, but I am keeping an eye on them.

Thanks fopr the tip. My first one, I bought the first of the year, is still cranking them out without a hiccup. I can't guess how many rounds my son and his family have put through it. This one managed about 85 rounds. Think I'll let SW take care of it anyway. But appreciate the info.

If you remove the rear takedown pin just as if you were cleaning it you should see the problem.. something is in a bind which means you have one of the 2 trigger/hammer pins have backed out or a piece of brass or other debri is in the trigger mech.

I'd at least give this rifle an inspection before going to the hassle of sending it to S&W.

Trigger and hammer pins should not "walk out" even on the 5.56mm version unless you've played with the lower receiver pins -- or the springs were not in the right place from the factory.

The two legs of the hammer spring go on top of the trigger pin and one leg snaps into the groove near one end of the pin. As noted above you can confirm this just by looking inside. The hammer pin is secured by an internal J-pin in the hammer and should also just "click" in place.

An out of place pin can also be seen just looking at the side of the lower receiver.

Right on targer Chuck.

The only explanation I could come up with was that the spring was not engaged in the groove correctly from the factory. It should not move (but did). Similar issue with the hammer pin - once "clicked" it has not moved.

yea friend at the club had same problem trigger
pin shifted a little easy fix though:)

UPDATE

I'm not a gun smith or very handy in that area, so I decided to return the rifle to SW. Called Customer Service on Monday, 9/27/10. Spoke with "Kelley." She advised that the shipping label would be sent email. Got it within 2 hours and shipped the gun that afternoon. Checked tracking number and it was received by SW the next day, 9/28/10. On 10/1/10, 3 days later, I called to check the status. It was already in mailing and should be here soon. Kelley also said that if I checked with her Monday (tomorrow) she'd get me a tracking number. This is the type of customer service that I've always received from SW. And from several past experiences, I can say that Kelley is by far the best customer service rep with whom I've ever dealt, from any company.

UPDATE

15-22 back from S&W this morning, eight days from the time I called with the problem. Only notation " REPAIRED - UPDATED TO LATEST SPEC." Which is fine with me. All seems to be well, hope to get it out this weekend. Oh, yeah, came back with an extra mag. Eight days from initial call to return of serviced gun - can't beat that for customer service.
