Did not shoot sighters on the chickens (50m) and pigs (100m) as they should be the same or close to the same distances as FP pigs (50 yards but 1/2 the size of BB pigs) and rams (100yds). Made a SWAG setting and let fly on the 150m turkey. Good guess, elevation-wise, but somewhat to the right. Tried another and got a hit so used the last three sighter rounds to find the rams, somewhat! Again, more trouble with windage than elevation. That "el cheapo" used Simmons 3-9x scope with target turrets is proving very user friendly. It took an entire turn of elevation from the 100 setting to get on the 200yd rams!
Done with sighters, cranked out the extra turn of elevation post haste (lest it be forgotten) and a bit more to the previously established 50yd/m setting.
BTW, the load is quite mild, being that it's pure lead, swaged SWC Speer "plinker" bullets. Found that a charge of either Reloder 7 or IMR4198 (used here) that fills the case to the bottom of the bullet runs clean, isn't powder position sensitive, and has upped my Field Pistol scores immediately upon adoption. Must be subsonic, but no chronographing done yet.
So, onto the show! Managed to snatch the trigger only once during the 50m chicken stage, so 9 out of ten. Happy, happy!
Moved over to the 100m pigs and got six, which is about average for the similar sized 100yd FP rams, so no real complaints there, except misses were generally right, even with a bit of left hold courtesy of my spotter's instructions.
Turkeys, evil turkeys! Only two out of ten, again, elevation pretty much where the crosshairs were showing when the trigger was pulled, but weird windage variations! Tried very hard not to induce cant, either by looking at the high rise mount's orientation or the crosshairs in the scope, which seemed less reliable....Even tried dialing in windage, but the results were inconsistent or counterproductive.
Late in the day, a little breeze doesn't help matters standing steady, fatigue definitely an issue, and dehydrated. Not no mention a bit confounded! Happy that there's no elevation inconsistency issues, though.
Finally, Rams! Big ole' CLANK makin', slow falling, massive rams. A comment was made to level the crosshairs on the support rail and then lift a little to the desired POI, which seems logical, so here goes nuttin'.
Get onto ram #1, double check it's the correct one (!) aim, Squeeze, aim, squeeze some more, bang.......Drat. Right. Add some left windage, Bang.......Clang!....crunch. Over goes a ram. Finally.
At least the misses are consistently right. Mess with windage, overcorrect, come back, miss right again, hold left the next time, etc. Final tally: four rams. (21 total)
Done! Pooped! And three hour's drive to go before home. But happy and challenged! Will be back for more.
Also shot a Dan Wesson .357 Super Mag/Maximum, but wrong brand and NOT standing, which removes much of the thrill. (Score: 24, with 4 mysterious pig misses) A TC in 7-30 Waters was tried as well. Pulled a 30 out of 40 with that one.
