Hello everyone! Name is Bill and I'm a newbie. Always wanted to get a handgun someday so I just picked up the new M&P 22 pistol to learn with; I was lucky enough to find a place that had just one in stock. I must say without mentioning names that the place of purchase wasn't too helpful when it came to getting one of my questions answered. Cleaning supplies. They basically just put the product in my hands without telling me anything so I opted to do more research before picking up supplies. I've been poking around online quite a bit and looking through this forum but am a bit overwhelmed with it so I figured I'd try this.

Recommendations as to what to pick up? Kit? Purchase separately? Bore snake? Rod and patches? From what I gather I would just need a solvent, gun oil, rod and patch with patch holder and either a brass or nylon brush? Someone recommended this pro shot kit.

6.5" Pistol Kit .22 Cal.

Oils and cleaners safe for the M&P?

Experience with smith and wesson brand cleaning supplies?

Confusion

Any replies would be appreciated! Thank you!

That Pro-Shot kit looks like it would work fine. I would only caution you to make sure it is compatible with Hoppes brushes and mops (most are) due to the ease of finding Hoppes products.
I have found that running a brush through the bore of a 22lr actually works against accuracy. Personally, I use a patch with a little Wonder Lube on it to knock any excess fouling, followed by a dry patch.
The main thing is to keep the action clean as if it gets mucked up it could cause your gun to jam. Keep your magazines clean as well. Use a good solvent and a toothbrush and that should do the trick.

I like to keep it simple, and generally use the following:

- CLP (cleaner, lubricant, protectant) in either the spray bottle or squeeze bottle
- .22 cal boresnake for pistols
- patches (for external use, so they can be any size)
- Tetralube or similar
- Q-tips

It's also handy to have an old T-shirt or similar to place the gun on while you are cleaning it to prevent scratches and keepmyour table clean.

Be sure to read the manual to see what it recommends for cleaning and lubrication.
- toothbrush

Welcome to the forum!

I primarily use Shooters Choice cleaning solvent. Have used many brands of oil/lube; CLP, Hoppes, Shooters Choice, Birchwood Casey. Have settled down to SC FP-10 and CLP. None of these products has harmed any of my firearms. Zero experience with SW cleaning products. I avoid ammonia based cleaners and never use stainless brushes. This is just what has worked for me- I am not an expert. Googling this topic (gun cleaning methods/materials) can certainly be overwhelming.

On my .22's I usually use a boresnake. I hate watching the rod "scrape by" the breech. I need to find a smaller diameter rod with a bore guide but have never seen one available for a .22 pistol barrel. The snakes seem to work pretty good for me.

Have you shot the MP22? How does it run? Maybe you could give a quick review after ya put a few hundred through it? I have a couple MP9's and like them quite a bit. Havent even seen the MP22 yet. Really like the MP platform

I do not think much of that kit that was linked to. It has a nylon brush, I prefer a bronze brush and it has not cleaning solvent. You can go to Wal Mart, Bass Pro or similar store and get a better kit for less money. You need a cleaning rod, bronze brush, patch holder/jag, patches and a cleaner solvent. Breakfree CLP will work fine or what ever comes with the kit. Usually a solvent and then some oil.

Something like this Universal will work just fine.

I appreciate all of the replies; I'm pleased with this board already as normally when a newbie jumps on a board they often don't get much for answers. I have read some things about brushing a 22 pistol working against accuracy; also read that if you are going to brush to use a nylon instead of brass brush. Looks like most agree though that a brass brush will in no way hurt that barrel and just to stay away from any form of steel brush. As for rods scraping the barrel? No bore guide for 22 pistol that I can find. Sounds like the coated rods pick up gunk from what I find. Experience with carbon fiber rods? Can't patch holders (jags?) scratch the bore when being ran through? Or does the patch cover the jag completely? My only experience with 3 in 1 products (other applications besides firearms) is that they do not work as well as 3 seperate products even if easier. I think I might give the smith and wesson cleaning products a try. And as for a review of the m&p 22; once I get a few rounds though I will post Thoughts? Hope this wasn't too long winded

Thanks again

I would love to have an MP 22 to practice with....would save me some cash on ammo. I went the personal defense route, and bought an MP 9mm Pro. I simply love the gun :)

I plan on upgrading at some point to a 9mm at some point; once I become a halfway proficient shooter and learn the basics :)

Aluminum rods scratching steel barrels???? When did this start happening?
And brushes ruining accuracy on a .22 pistol? Come on....

I use brass brushes on my target .22's and I have never had an issue. If you want to get the lead out, you have to use a brush and solvent. And I'm shooting for 100 shots in a .22" circle at 50 feet. Probably a bit more accurate than a .22 pistol is going for.
And this is an M&P not a 41 or High Standard....

Keep it simple. Bore snake it, wipe it down and be happy. You'll like the gun more, shoot it more and life will just be better for you. :D

Couldn't have said it better Lost Lake. When you wear out a everyday shooter with a brass brush. There are several company's that will pay you BIG BUCKS to head up their deburring department.

Now I'm sure someone's going to come on and say that they lost their accuracy in their micro nats wing shooter at a million yards.

You have some simple cheap info right up here.

Dan :)

Welcome to the forum and to handgunning, skiphreak. I use a brass brush, patches and Hoppes #9 solvent to clean the bores of my guns. For light lube and rust protection (all you need on a 22), I like Breakfree CLP. The boresnakes are okay for a quick clean, but do not get the metal fouling out as good as a brass brush with solvent.

First off, you have a lead bullet SCREAMING down the barrel.....a brush isn't going to do SQUAT to the inside of the barrel, nor is a patch holder or an aluminum rod.

I have 2400 rounds down the barrel of my MP Pro 9mm. And after I clean it, it looks like the day it came off the factory line. A simple brass brush, cleaning solvent for the barrel is all you need.

When I let my gun sit, or I know it will be a while before i shoot again, I take a clean cloth patch, put a small drop of oil on each side...and run it down the barrel just to give it a light coat to prevent rust. And since I carry in a leather holster (and leather tends to hold moisture), I figure it can't hurt.
