It's odd but decent pistols at a reasonable price aren't too common up here. Most are in rather shabby condition or wickedly overpriced, but once in a while I get lucky. This is a perfect example. I'm positive it's a re-nickel but an old one and very nicely done. There's no flaking or nickel loss just some freckling here and there. Of most importance, the mechanics are perfect! The chambers are lovely but there is some rippling in the bore though the rifling is strong. Though I doubt the re-nickel was done by S&W (no star by the serial #) it was properly done, meaning the trigger guard and barrel latch were left in the blue. There's still nice case hardening evident on both the hammer and trigger. Just thought I'd share.

Re-nickel ?

I don't see any dishing around the screws, but hard to see from photos. If I may ask, why do you think its a re-nickel. I,m new to this forum also.

Welcome! I'm by no means an expert but over the years on this forum the folks who have so kindly shared their collective wisdom have educated me a lot. I'm attaching a more blown up picture of the pistol. You will note the slight dishing on the 2 screws as well as the fact that the side plate fitment is very slightly too large. If S&W had done the work they'd likely have put a star next to the serial on the butt and the date code on the frame under the grips. I've never seen original nickel survive this well in such an old pistol but then like I said, I'm far from an expert. Because the trigger guard and barrel latch were left in the blue, just as S&W would have made it, or left it had they done the work, is the reason that I said I believe it to be a re-nickel by someone very competent. I have a very nice blued pistol that went back to S&W in Aug.1921 for a full rework, according to the stamps (see pics)
