First Model Schofield Value

I have this fairly standard issue First Model, S/N 2xx, fitting the history of a military purchase with all the correct markings, including a US on the toe of the butt, and L & P frame stamps. I'm curious what the current value might be. Also, the cartouche on the left stock escapes me--anyone know what those initials are?

Very nice gun. I believe your cartouche has been helped some. Likely the original Sub-inspector was Samuel B. Lewis. (see photo comparison) The dates he worked at the Arsenal are correct for this early gun.

I also like the number stamped on the bottom of the wood grip. This suggests it was part of a small group of guns used in a State Militia. These guns are very hard to research so what Militia would be a challenge to identify and confirm.

Value? The gun presents itself very well. Smooth surfaces, low serial number, special markings, appears to have old bluing still in areas of the surfaces. Definitely in the thousands of dollars but honestly? I'd have to have it in hand to give a more accurate evaluation. A photo doesn't cut it with a gun in this condition.

Thanks for the feedback. Here's hopefully a better picture of that cartouche. It looks original to me, but like you said, gun in hand is quite different from pictures. And my pictures aren't very good--I'm trying some things to get better...

That looks like "BH" to me.

BH looks very possible--best I came up with was BYC. According to what I can find, it should be SBL, like BMur said, or JFEC. Other possibilities for Second Models, but first seemed limited. Maybe it was a day off for SBL, and BH filled in for him...

Military inspector?

Hey Hounddog,
I'm sorry but I can't find a reference for BH from my list of Military inspectors of that ERA. That's a much better photo. Maybe someone else has a listing?
