First outing with the shield

Had a great time shooting the shield today. Absolutely no problems at all except after I got back I noticed what looks to me like the back end of the slide hitting the frame. In the picture it's the left side of the textured part. It looks like its hitting something. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I just looked at my Shield 40 and it doesn't look like it is touching at all like your pic is showing. Have you taken it apart and re assembled to see if it sits any different?

I would say that is now a structural defect and needs returned.

It's hard to see from that picture. How does it look when you disassemble it?

Here is what the slide looks like when I remove it from the gun. Guess I'll be calling Smith & Wesson tomorrow.

Geeze, I have a Shield, yet to be taken to the range. I keep seeing what appears to be QC issues with this new model. It can't be the entire run since the favorable reports outweigh the negative. It is troublesome though.

my shield is OK, but i see that spacing on the left side is smaller that on the right side. But it's not out of balance like in your situation

Is there damage to the slide? Or is it just to the cover that locks in the striker?

Its looks like the back piece of the striker assembly has a manufacturing defect in it. The back of the striker has damage as shown in the picture and just a little on the piece right below it. Other than that I can not find any damage to the slide.

Shield Slide

Hard to tell from the picture. Does not look right. Almost as if the slide is not seated correctly. Disassemble and make sure slide is on the frame correctly. You may have to send back to S&W for repair/replacement.

leave out the recoil spring and see how it cycles by hand. Any dragging or scratching feeling ? Any inside parts too shiney were they could have been rubbing ?

Sorry but the pics just don't show enough for me to see anything. I enlarged the pics and can't see specifically what is wrong, other than the plastic end cap opening could be slightly misformed. If it is the slide end cap hitting, don't worry it will wear away, or you could take a file to it. What little I can see, it should not affect the operation of the gun in any way. Call Smith and explain, they will likely send you out a new cap.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, I just cant get a good one. In the second picture I posted, there is a glare right under the damaged spot. This is the back of the striker assembly, where instead of sitting flush with the edge of the slide, it protrudes in twords the middle. I can not see any obvious damage to any other piece of the gun though there is a hard catch about a 1/4" from locking open when putting the slide back on. That whole end piece will rock from side to side about an 1/8". I have sent an online request for a return slip.

After filling out the online form & two phone calls and waiting a week and a half I finally got my ship tag. I will update with what they do to it when I get it back.

I just got a Shield 40 yesterday and its on its way to S&W repair today. I shot 100 rounds thru it and the striker cover fell out and the striker assembly shot out on the ground! I called CS and they were going to send me the pick up tag but I told them I wanted to just send the slide for them to repair. It went out today, hopefully I get it back in 10 days or so. Not too happy about the quality of this shield and I have a shield 9mm on order......

I wouldn't be surprised if I would have had the same problem if I would have had more ammo to shoot. I hope this isn't a new issue evolving with the shields.

Called customer service today and they said it was in the shop and should be out to the range later and in the mail back to me late this week. Absolutely can not wait to get this thing back to the range.

Be patient. S&W is swamped with work right now. I had to send my new M&P 40 in and it was gone for six weeks. I called yesterday to ask about the factory trigger job and the guy said not to bother sending my gun in right now for that. All custom work is on the back burner so they can deal with warranty work.

Just to finish up this thread: Here is my final follow up.

2-3-13 - Sent online request for repair
2-13-13 - after two calls finally got my return tag sent to me via email and sent gun off in original box inside of another box.
3-5-13 - received gun back.

A little confusion on the repair tag but everything is fixed. At the top it stated that gun is in working order and no repairs were needed, then written at the bottom of same sheet it said that they replaced the striker backplate, which indeed was done.

So just over a month from the time I sent in for a return until I got it back, they included a new magazine for my troubles. They returned everything I sent them but it little plastic piece that came in the chamber to show it was not loaded (no big loss really).

I got the slide back a week ago after a two week wait (not to bad). Took it to the range and after 45 rds the dam end cap slid down again. I pushed it back up and ran another 100 rds thru and had to push the end cap up again. I ran a total of 200 rds thru it yesterday and 150 today with the end cap staying in place??? Also had problems with the slide fully cycling to seat the next round, in 150 rounds i had to "help" the slide close about 15 times(3 different brands of ammo, clean and lubed gun)! I have sent another email to CS and am awaiting the reply. This sux, i really like shooting this gun but having these problems has me very leary at this point to use as an EDC. I hear lots of great reviews about this gun, looks like i got a troubled one, hope they can get it straightened out this time!

Update

So I went to the range today, it seems that the firing pin is not retracting when the slide comes back to eject and re chamber a new round. So the cartridge is getting bound up on the firing pin! I have pictures but I can't figure out to post from my iPad. I will put them up when I get back to a computer.

Look up on YouTube to see how typo disassemble the strike assembly and see if you can find out why it's binding up. It's quite easy to take apart.
