First reloads?

...For every .030" more bullet that is inside the case, I reduce my fast burning powders by .2gr. .060" more inside the case and I reduce the minimum load by .4gr and work up from there.

This is a very useful general concept...thank you.

I use Win 231 and Hodgdon HS-6 for 9mm. I assume the W231 falls into the "faster" category, but how about the slower HS-6?

Since one uses more HS-6 powder compared to the W231, so reducing by 0.2 grains would be quite a bit smaller reduction as a percentage to a similar W231 load. Do you think 0.2 grains per 0.030" would still be safe?

HS-6 is a bit different in my book. It is a ball powder that has to have magnum primers to work well at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm not throwing stones at it. Since it already has problems getting ignited, I probably wouldn't reduce it much at all. I would just make sure that the load wasn't in danger of being compressed. Compress powder and all bets are off! ;)

Reduce it too far and you will get squibs, so, I suppose for .030" I wouldn't reduce a starting load. But I never start at the top of the data anyway! Reloading 101! ;)

Just finished 100 9mm 125gr. lrn 3.5gr. of Bullseye. I got a free Lee Pro 1000 maybe 9-10 years ago and it has been sitting in the cellar since then. I dusted it off cleaned and set the dies and even got the powder disc system working. The base had never been mounted. Not exactly a RCBS or Hornady but I'm making cartridges and thats a start. Thanks again for the help. Will try these after Friday night practice.

Update.. Rounds all fired well. Accuracy was good (In the black on a B-2 at 30'off hand ) Recoil was good but seemed to be a fair amount of smoke. I'll need to work on that but all things considered I'm happy with the outcome.

The smoke is probably from bullet lube. Not much you can do about that.

Glad you had success. The 9mm isn't the easiest cartridge to start with. Don't worry that your setup isn't the latest and greatest. There is no keeping up with the Jones's here. You're getting good ammo and that's all that matters.
