First S&W ever

I finally bought my first S&W 686 plus 3" IN 357 Magnum revolver. Traded a 2" EAA Windicator & a GP100 4" both 357
in magnum for the Smith. I kept hearing all the chatter about how smooth the DA was compaired to Ruger's DA so I went to a Gun Show here in So. Fl. My choices were between the 2.75 & 3" models for SD & Carry .The 3" was balanced so well that I immediately chose the 3".

What's the best range ammo and what's the best SD ammo for my NIB 686 plus?

Welcome! I think you're going to really like your new 686. There are a lot of good options for ammunition out there. Stick with high quality hollowpoint ammunition. I believe Speer makes a 135 grain bullet loaded for short barreled revolvers, but i haven't tried it.

For range ammo, 158gr FMJ .38 or .357. Been waiting for Cabela's to run sales on Herter's and combined with their club discounts they run $14 for 38's to $16 a box for .357's.

For SD, 125gr HP from Federal (C357B) for 2 legged and 180 gr from BB (19A) for 4 legged.

As far as ammo is concerned, I carried Federal Hydro Shok for a long tine, but now carry Hornady Critical Defense. Range ammo is whatever is available.
