First snubbie

Hello to all - first post at S&W forum. I just put a deposit on my first S&W. It is a Model 36 serial number 1J6XX. Can anyone tell me the year of production? The gun is in excellent shape. Finish is 90%+ with a little holster wear at the muzzle and cylinder (very little) and a little light rust on the right hand side of the frame next to the grip (10-15 specks). The asking price is $295 - sound fair?

Welcome to the forum. I'm not 100% sure, but if I'm reading my copy of the SCSW correctly yours would be from around 1982. Hopefully someone else can confirm that. If the gun is as you describe I think you did real good with the price. Pictures are always liked here and encouraged.

Welcome to the Forum. I think this is a 1971 shipped gun. Does it have a two-piece or one-piece box? It sounds like a good price if mechanically sound. Enjoy!

Yes, I have a USN connection. I was a Chief Yeoman on submarines. Retired in 07 with 21 years.

True. They're just so darned cute; nobody should have just one.

Just beware those folks with an inordinate fondness for those oversized N frames. They're compensating for other...shall we say...shortcomings.

It is technically not my first snubbie. I have a 1964 Colt Cobra and a 1983 Detective Special. I also have a Ruger LCR. This is my first S&W snubbie. I went to the contact us link on the S&W website and sent them an email asking about the date of production. I gave them the model and serial number and they emailed me back that the gun was produced in 1969.

Will pick it up in the next few days and post pics.

This is the correct box for the era. A slightly later gun with a similar SN would have had a one-piece box.
