First Time Disappointed in Dillon Precision

No Big Deal

Nothing to do with Dillon. The box, the packing, the labor.. Someone has to pay for it.
I use my UPS account and give the number to the shipper, since we get a discount. Same with our metered mail.
You are lucky they don't use flat rate, Say $20 bucks no matter what the size:)

Muss Muggins:

I'm not "mad" at Dillon or anyone, just disappointed because, I guess, this little, very light item could be mailed for less than 2 bucks and they did that the first time I bought one. Almost $40 for the little wallet and shipping seems a bit much.

I'll check around the next time I need something and not go straight to Dillon since I don't want to pay more for shipping, much more, than shipping will cost.

I will post the cost of shipping when I get the little envelope next week.

You mean you'll let us know what the postage, UPS or Fedex charge was, which is different than "shipping and handling."

Rule 3:

IXL makes the wallet. It's smaller and much lighter than the one in the link you posted.

Inspcallahan:
That's what I did the first time. Didn't work this time.

Jack Flash:

Yup, I've been a cheerleader for Dillon for years. This is the first time I felt "unsatisfied."

OK, buy it direct from IHL and pay more PLUS $12.90 shipping:D

Someone raised a good point that fuel prices have gone down. Remember when gas was at $4/gallon and they all said that was the reason they raised prices?

Now fuel has tumbled to less than $2/gallon, but shipping prices stay right where they have been. No doubt when gas inevitably goes up again in a year or two, they will use that as an excuse to raise prices yet again. I guess what goes up must go up ... and up and up.

Muss Muggins:

Yes, the USPS postage on the envelope. The Dillon rep said that's how small items were shipped and that's how the wallet would be shipped.

Rule 3:

No, no,no! I want to pay less, not more. I paid the $9.99 for shipping the $28.95 wallet to me. I just hoped they'd treat me as they did when I bought the last one.

But, didn't happen.

I remember a cutlery firm in Atlanta I will not ID, even though it no longer exists. I asked about S&H on a $9.95 pen knife: $1.95 said the phone rep. When I tried to order an identical- size, higher quality pen knife for $99.95, S&H rose to $12.95. But it's the same size as the cheaper knife, I protested. No matter, that's the S&H charge on 99.95... Cancelled the order. I know some folks will justify this, but not to me, please.

Wow kaaskop49, I remember that cutlery company, too. I used to buy a lot of stuff from them in the late 70s or early 80s if I recall the years correctly.

Their S&H was high, but they had "stuff" most other places didn't have. I bought several repo British Commando Knives (that they swore were genuine) for from$12.95 to about $18.95.

Well, they were genuine knives.

Shipping is a cost of doing business. I manufacture and ship sight pushers. They are shipped in small flat rate boxes. This week, the price went from $5.25 to $6.10. Since my shipping is included in the purchase price, I eat the difference. Actually, the difference is what I don't get to eat. :D The handling part is the bitch. Printing instruction sheets, product labels, mailing labels, bagging, boxing, and going to the post office, takes almost as much time as manufacturing the product. In the last 7 days, we have packed and shipped almost 40 pushers. I would guess that about 8 hrs. have been devoted to packing and shipping.
I agree that the mail order outfits should include the handling in the product price, and postage should not be a profit center. However, in the competitive marketplace, where everyone googles around looking for the cheapest price, most seem reluctant to do this.

Well.... they got to pay the guy to answer the phone. Then he's got to be familiar enough will the zillions of products in Dillon's inventory to know that the guy on the other end of the phone who keeps saying IXL actually means IHL. That's worth $5 right there. :D

I have been using Dillon stuff for many years now. They live up to their hype and anyone I have talked with knew their product line well.

May years ago I ordered some parts to upgrade my press. They arrived but were the wrong ones (the mistake was on their part) I called up and explained it to the voice on the phone. He checked into it and said our fault I will send out the right stuff immediately. I asked about sending back the wrong items I said send me a mailing label and I will return. In today’s prices about a $125 in value!

The voice said no it’s just not worth it keep them with our complements. I said with a laugh I hope this does not come out of your pocket and the reply I got surprised me. He said it did come out of his pocket.

You guessed it by now I got THE BIG MAN himself. We chit chatted a bit and he said do you have a few more minuet’s to talk shop with me and I replied yes. Well we spent another 15 minuet’s or so on the phone and he debriefed me about reloading type subjects and asked my opinion on a lot of reloading type subjects. He told me he answers the phone at times and is glad to talk with customers and in some cases pick their brains. No wonder they have such a successful business.

Wish more companies would follow his lead!

I too am a fan of Dillon. I have an SL900 and a 550B. There is a small part on the SL900 that I saw was going to get worn out. I called them and tried to order a couple of them. Now remember, this part wasn't broken, I just wanted spares. They wouldn't let me pay for the part and shipped me 5 of them for free.

That's quality customer service.

But wait-shipping-it's $9.99! Ten bucks to ship something really small and light?

Or, is it possible that I am out of line? Naaaaa, no chance, is there?

Bob
Yes, a little out of line, but not too far. So the thing cost $39. The last one lasted, what, at least 15 years? That's $2.60/year? Isn't it worth it? I still think it's a deal.

Shipping costs a retail company more than the price of postage. There is a bunch of overhead included in that. Believe it or not, it's less expensive for the company to just charge one flat rate than to adjust it for every order.

No, I don't complain about shipping until it gets higher than $25. Because I have to drive at least 40 miles to the nearest large town, unless shipping is more than $25, I'm still saving money by having it shipped to me.

I've been a Dillon customer for well over 25 years and in all that time have never, ever had a problem.

The last five or so years, purchases have been few and far between since I really have pretty much all the "stuff" I need.

But, my speed strip pouch is pretty beat and I wanted a new one-the IXL Speedstrip Wallet Dillon sells. I bought one of these years ago from Dillon, but time and my carelessness has made it, uhhhhh, ugly (that's speaking kindly of its looks). :(

So I checked the on-line catalog and it is $28.95. Seems a bit high for what it is, but, what the heck, I want a new one.

But wait-shipping-it's $9.99! Ten bucks to ship something really small and light?

But, I remember ordering something like this a few years ago, maybe the first IXL Wallet I purchased, but I am not sure. Anyway, the fellow back then said shipping was X amount, but that's so high and this is so small that we'll just drop it in the mail for you.

Great, I got it and the shipping was a small amount, maybe less than a buck.

So, I called Dillon, explained I wanted the IXL, but wondered if he'd drop it in the mail and save me the 10 bucks shipping.

He said it would go in the mail alright, but shipping was still gonna be $9.99.

OUCH!

I was a little annoyed, but I wanted the pouch, so I gave him the credit card.

But, I decided to be more careful about where I buy from now on and Dillon's won't be the first place I look with shipping being that high for something that small.

In this case, Dillon or IXL is the only source and IIRC, IXL's shipping is just as much or more.

Or, is it possible that I am out of line? Naaaaa, no chance, is there?

I wanted a calendar and thought the $10 S&W was wy to much for something they could drop in a shipping envelope and put a bucks worth of stamps on it but the sales dept said no it was $10. This has stopped me from buying some small things i would have bought. I paid Brownell $40 at the beginning of the year for a membership with free shipping and have already saved more money then that. Between them and my Amazon Prime membership I save a lot of money and can order a 50 cent screw with out paying the $7.50 S&H. Don

Hey don't get me wrong in the above post I love Dillion and blue is my favorite color. I still think on the Blue Press cover it should say. Which Dillion Girl is Right for YOU? Not that I am picky. Don

I recently bought some replacement parts form Lyman. $11 for the parts, and $10 for shipping. If it had been form Dillon the parts would have been free and the S&H the same.

My first dealing with Dillon customer service was last year for a washer, and 2 small plastic parts for a RF100--the Representative I spoke with quoted me $21 shipped.

Called RCBS up a couple weeks ago as I had stripped the head out of a Allen set-screw on one of my dies they asked me for my address, and sent me 3 replacement set screws and a half-dozen brass pieces to place behind the set screw at no charge--no BS either.

If you've worked for a large corporation, you know that there will never, ever, ever be enough profit, ever!!

As for Dillon's shipping rates, I'd say they are a bit high. But, it's their business, and they charge what they need to charge for their business model to be successful.

Some companies build in the charges into the cost of the product itself, some don't, some do a mix. Some companies are around for generations, some go out of business pretty quick. We customers just spend our money where we feel we get the best value.
