....pics I took from my NEW smart phone. But let me give you the back story...

Several days ago I lost my old flip phone. I'll spare you the agonizing details of that. I then found myself forced by circumstance and technology to buy my first smart phone. I almost didn't do it. I thought, "Do I need a telephone, Really?" I sat in my truck in front of the cricket store and pondered that very question.

I caved. :o

I got the bare bones model and it is by comparison, loaded. they made me get a Gmail addy for some reason but I will never connect my phone to the net. No tellin' what kind of garbage would start rollin' in. shoot, I already get 10 or more texts from google and cricket and I don't know what all. I don't even look at them but I do have to delete them. Not too hard to do that at least, one swipe of my finger and they're gone.

BUT

Even thought I had to cave in on the smart phone thing I will never back up on my vow to never text and never facebook. I'm going to find that rusty old beer can opener that I keep in the garage and carve these words into my chest:

I'LL NEVER TAKE A LOOK AT FACEBOOK
AND I VOW NEXT TO NEVER EVER TEXT

After all a guy needs to maintain SOME self respect, right?

But I did start foolin' around with the camera. My camera is very complicated to use and to get the pics onto my computer. Many steps involved which I never seem to be able to remember. But I have figured out how to use the camera in the phone and how to put the pics from there into my laptop and posting from that point is no problem. It's all easy as pie.

The operating system is something else. Must have been figured out by and angry child. A lot of it is being able to recognize a bunch of little pictures and guess what they might mean. Some of them are obvious like the little camera is for the camera. But most of them I have no idea what the pic is suppose to be or what might happen when I tap it. Fortunately for me it isn't a problem because I am not interested in any of them. I asked the girl in Cricket if she could take them off for me she just grinned and kind of sympathetic grin and ever so slightly shook her head one time.

I get it.

But I'm makin' progress and as long as I can stick to my guns on how I'm gonna use this darn thing I guess (HOPE) it'll be alright. It too is a pretty ugly story and I'll spare ya that one too.

Actually I did take a couple of pics of the cool karma I won from Mike and posted them in that thread but I then took some pics of the boys and thought I'd send them along. They aren't great. The least little movement will cause the pic to blur. I know they put better cameras in more expensive phones but these are good enough for me. Especially after I learn to hold the thing still while takin' a pic.

I know what you mean. But you're ahead of me with the pics. I can take them with my phone but have no idea how to make them go anywhere else. Never Facebook or any other social media.... Other than this forum of course.

And I have 4 cats.

TW, I'm about the last one to give advice or instructions on much of anything like a phone or a computer but If you can get a charge chord for your phone with a USB port on the other end or a USB port adapter that will fit it You can just plug that in to the USB port on your computer. A screen will appear on the computer that will direct you through the process.

Good Luck. Now post us a few pics of your cats. (Read my sig line) ;)

Better to transition to a smartphone now rather than having to use the latest and greatest gizmo down the road.........cold turkey.

I don't mind all the apps but just wish the phone was smaller but heck, then I couldn't see the dang screen. I like the hands free/bluetooth connection in the car, great camera and the health/pedometer application. Easy to keep up with the walking miles.

Try the Facetime app with the grandkids.....they will be glad to show you how to use it! Just remember to NEVER answer a Facetime call in the bathroom!

You make a good point Bill. Get in and get it over with before it gets any worse. But my phone is not an APPLE product and I think that the "face time" thing is an APPLE feature? Miss Pam and my daughter and all the grand kids have that on their APPLE "devices". And if I couldn't use my phone when in the can that would severely restrict my telephone time. :D

I'll be fine...

Although it's too late for you (and probably Tradewind36), one advantage of the iPhone is that once you take a photo, it is instantly sent to your iCloud Photos file, and will appear shortly thereafter in your Photos file on your Mac computer, or any other Mac device you have. No physical connection is necessary, and it all happens automatically. I think you can get get this, or a similar system, for non-Mac computers, but I'm not sure, as I've never owned a non-Mac computer.

I'm in the same boat. I will grudgingly get a smart phone but will NOT do the social media thing. Texting will be only done if I have to. But the Google Maps app and the WAZE app I will download and use since my grandson is playing travel soccer. If you do any traveling that WAZE app is great. It tells you all the stuff the truckers did when CB's were popular.

Pretty kitty's ya got there. :D

The GMail is from Google, the same company that make the phone's Android operating system. This matters because the Google account is designed to work with your phone.

A reason you might want to delve into it, is that when you take a pic with your phone, it can automatically be sent to the cloud and immediately be available on your computer, through your Google account's Photo's directory.

Syncing your contacts to your account is another convenient time saver.

Good luck.

I have a $17 flip phone that costs $35 every three months. Provider rolls over phone numbers, so mine came with a history that speaks Spanish.
I turned off texting and have never attempted to open my voice mail. I may look at the "missed calls" screen once in a while.

Users can actually set their iPhone to not send their stuff to the Cloud. I store absolutely nothing on the Cloud. The Cloud is not secure.

When it comes to irreplaceable photos or digital files, offsite storage is critical, in case something happens to your home, like a fire. If you control multiple secure locations, and can store backups there, that is ideal. For most people, cloud storage, especially of photos, is the only offsite backup protection they have.

I agree the cloud is insecure, as the primary and solitary file storage location. But as the backup/secondary location, it's ideal for things that are not confidential/secret.

The emotional devastation of being caught digitally unprepared is driven home after every disaster, during interviews with victims bemoaning their lifetime of lost family photos.

I don't have a smart phone but a little phone with a slide out keyboard for texting. I don't like texting either but my house has very poor cell phone reception and a text will usually go through when I can't talk on it.

I love my smart phone. :D

However, I refrain from using it when behind the wheel, except for taking calls, which are routed through my radio via bluetooth. Nor will you find me taking pictures of my food to post to facebook, or bent over it in a restaurant sending text messages to my minions. :p

God forbid I'm caught "digitally unprepared."

Actually, I don't disagree with you. My important papers/photos/etc. are stored offsite (not a commercial site) on an external hard drive and backed up on disc...not on some nebulous imaginary "cloud" owned by Apple or any other entity. External drives are incredibly inexpensive now, as are digital recording media.

With my iPhone, I'm offered 5 gigs of free storage in the Cloud. Additional storage cost money. I have to laugh at that. Five gigs is nothing as far as data storage goes.

I had to take my wife to the Doctors a few weeks ago, there was a sign on the door saying turn off your phones, when you got to the window to sign in there was another sign, and when you sat down there was another sign on the wall, I looked around and almost everyone in there was on there phones:confused: I don't know how these people can text when they can't even read.

The current "limited" free Google/Android cloud storage limit is 17GB. That's not enough for all my photos, but they offer a second tier of unlimited photo storage in a compressed format that's fine for my needs.

If my 60 year old mom who's English is a second language can figure out a smart phone so can you!

The pictures are just like the pictures on your computer. You figured out what those are right? I understand that the picture itself can be different but the idea is the same.

By swiping your finger across the screen you don't actually delete the text messages, you're simply dismissing the announcement that you have a text message.

Smart phones ARE NOT JUST for Facebook, which many people seem to think. I use mine for everything, including typing this and ordering ammo at 6:30am. I read news, browse online stores, buy stuff, surf this forum and others, GPS directions, live traffic....I use it for everything and yet I don't have a Facebook account, never did. Phones have NOTHING to do with social media. Mine works perfectly fine without it and so will yours.

Same goes for texting. I find it faster and easier to text most of the time simply because it's faster than a phone call..... unless you need to have a conversation. Today in the morning I texted my mom...."roads are clear" I didn't need to call her because I leave my house an hour and half before she even wakes up. I don't have to sit there and wait for the phone to ring a dozen times so I can leave a voicemail. She doesn't have to log into her voicemail to listen. Simple passing of information. If there needs to be a conversation of course I'll call but to just pass on some info it's faster and easier to text.

Your phone is like your computer. Both work as computers perfectly fine with the use of any social media

Good Luck with that Jack, and may you never take a picture
of a gun on the floor with sandal or sock clad feet in view!

LOL!!!! Was that you!? I remember that. Made me smile and I thought, "That's just like something I'd do." It kind of stayed with me and now when I take pics of guns on the floor I am keenly aware of everything in the frame.

I tried to find the thread with you tootsies in the pics but was unable to. I guess I'll forgive you if you choose not to re post them.

Anyway here's a few of my guns-on-the-floor pics:

Note: I think my pics will look a lot better once I can learn to hold the dern phone still.

The only picture I've ever taken with my flip phone is one identical to my avatar. It actually came out pretty well.

Nope. Just seen more than a few and recall the chorus of whines from those who find offense.
Did not wish too see you backflip into the cesspool of the mundane.

Download Tapatalk to your phone you can go to the Forum while your wife is shopping and you can post pictures directly from your phone to the Forum. I started using a cell phone for work in 1997 . And we can complain about technology all we want, but I'm able to converse with my son who's in Iraq by using Facebook Messenger. If that's the only good thing to come thru Facebook that works for me. And if your grandchildren start texting to you trust me you'll text.
