First time poster

Just bought a s&w model 29 44mag “nickel” so called "classic" revolver and would like for someone to tell me what I have really got. Beautiful gun but not much experience with guns. Will this gun with its 4inch barrel hold up to the heavy mag loads? Is it uncomfortable to shoot? Will the nickel finish hold up?

The barrel length doesn't really have anything to do with whether it will hold up to heavy loads, that is a matter of the frame. And Model 29's with 2" barrels have the same frame as models with 8-3/8" barrels. Of course recoil will be more noticeable the shorter the barrel just because the overall weight of the gun is reduced.

I have a 629 with a 5" full lug barrel and it isn't uncomfortable to shoot per se but it's less comfy than my Super Redhawk with 7-1/2 inch barrel. I don't think there is a ton of difference between the 4" and 5" barrel as far as shooter comfort.

Will the gun hold up? I wouldn't worry about it, it's a beefy frame that will take a steady diet of full house loads. My guess is your wrist and hand will wear out before the gun does.

Any S&W in 44 Magnum should "hold up" with factory ammo or equivalent loads.

44magsam, welcome to the Forum. Certain chemicals, will damage the nickel finish. There have been threads on that here that you can search and read about. Hoppe's #9 is 1 of them (contains ammonia)
