First trip to the range

Ok, I just got home from my first trip to the range with my new MP Sport ll. I'll call it a good to great outing. Only a couple of issues. After getting the steel sites zeroed in..

I was getting some decent results.

Then this happened.

Apparently this was a failure to eject and the next round jammed in behind it. I cleared the jam and everything was fine until I pulled the trigger and nothing happened. About 60 rounds in to the range trip the trigger retaining pin worked its way out about an eighth of an inch. I got the pin put back in place put things back together and put another hundred rounds through it with no more issues. Other than those two hick ups it ran great out of the box. I did clean the gun well before I brought it to the range.

Looks like a great start, especially if you were shooting free hand with iron sites. If you were shooting from sand bags, then I would say you need to work on your technique, but still a good start.

Yeah it was from a sand bag. I know I have a lot of practice ahead of me but hey this kind of practice I LIKE!

I was going back to the range but I got distracted at home and it was too close to closing time. So I went to a LGS and they had a great deal in a Vortex Strikefire ll for $139.99. I was going to wait for an optic till I was proficient with iron sites but I couldn't pass on that deal. Haven't mounted it yet, unfortunately I won't be able to go to the range for at least 2 weeks.

I personally thought the S&W retaining pins are too small in diameter and move in and out too easily.

I had a spare BCM trigger from a BCM rifle that I installed a geissele trigger in.

The pins from the BCM fit more securely, good for now but I feel another geissele trigger will be going in since their all on sale this weekend.

Here is a pic of the stock trigger and the BCM I installed, the sport pins have three grooves instead of the normal two.

Congrats on the new rifle, if your pins walk again I would look at getting some geissele pins. The're a larger diameter to help from walking, or get a whole new trigger if funds are available.

HD, when I bought an AR STONER trigger I went ahead and ordered new pins as well. The AR-556 pins "seemed" to be a bit smaller in diameter, as to what you are referring to in your reply. My factory pins never walked out, but the new AR STONER pins are slightly larger in diameter.
I just checked my Sport I pins and they seem to be very tight.

That is the key. I don't care how well trained and skilled you become, If you don't practice regularly, you gradually lose a little of what you learned.

Update
After going to the range and getting the iron sites zeroed in (as best as I could) I had thought I would wait to get an optic. Well that didn't happen. I went to a LGS and they had a deal on a Vortex Strikefire ll which was one of the red dots I had my eye on. Picked it up for $139.
Anyway, I won't be able to go to the range for another week or so but I couldn't resist playing with it. There's a process in the manual to bore sight the red dot,

Place a target at 25 yards,

Line up the bore with the target sighting it through the barrel then adjusting the dot to the same target.

Worked great, not perfect but it should be close, then I can tweak it at the range.
BTW, as it turns out my patio is exactly 25 yards...who would of figured.

I don't understand why you are having the trigger and hammer pins walk out if the fire control group is properly installed. The "J" spring in the hammer should ride in the center groove of the hammer pin and hold it in place. The tails of the hammer spring should ride on top of and in the grooves in the trigger pin and hold that one in place.

The aftermarket pins are larger than stock to help control the pin rotation and give a more consistent trigger pull. However, after you drive them in and out a couple of times, the hole in the lower gets enlarged and you no longer have a friction fit in the frame.

After I figured out why the rifle wouldn't fire ( seeing the trigger pin protruding out one side of the lower) I was able to get it back in place and push the pin back in. After 100 more rounds and no problems I asked the gunsmith at the range about it. He inspected it and said all was well. He said its possible the spring popped out of the notch in the pin during shipping or it may have made it past QC at the manufacturer. At any rate the spring is seated in the notches on the pin and I haven't had any other problems. We will see...

Ahh, the old redneck boresight proceedure. That's how I sight in all my new optics/rifles. Well done.

Haha, well we just call it that here since we are always discussing fancy boresighter equipment and such to zero in your optics and rifles when all you really need to do is what you did.

Unlike others that are anal about doing this all the time, I am satisfied with my trigger now that it is set up to my liking. So, I won't be enlarging the trigger pin holes in the lower in the future at any time.
