I have a 66-2 I want to install a target hammer on. Stainless or flash chromed hammers in .500" exist but are proving frustratingly difficult to find.

Case-colored target hammers are much easier to source, and, as I have been told, can be flash-chromed easily and inexpensively.

Is this a good idea? Has anyone done it? What would it cost and who would be good to trust the work to? Would the finish necessarily match the factory s&w finish on the trigger?

Thanks for the advice

If it were me, I'd keep shopping until I found the correct factory produced part in the configuration you need.

Build up of flash chrome may give you some fit issues and there is no garantee that it will match in color.

Good Luck,

Drew

Flash-chrome is suppose to be a very light coating and is not suppose to cause any fitment concerns. The ND 617/s were flash-chromed and mine has held-up very well. I have not seen any 617 with a flaked or worn flash-chromed hammer and trigger. I guess this doesn't help with the rest of your question, as I do not have a good plater to recommend, but I did run across an advertisement the other day....if I can only remember who it was?

I doubt that anything you do will match the finish of your gun short of obtaining a SS hammer and trigger, which like you have already said....may be hard to find.

If you decide to get a target hammer flash-chromed, you could have your exisiting trigger done at the same time. They likely would match then.

your lucky you got responses on this, I posted pretty much the same thing a couple weeks ago about a 686P and have had no responses.

As for the flash chromed parts, look at the 625JM or the older 617's as mentioned and others. They dont match the cylinder and frame exactly but they are pretty close and can really only notice the difference if staring at it. I personally like the flash chromed look on the hammer/trigger instead of the case hardening "look". Midway and Brownells used to sell S&W Trigger/Hammer kits and I believe they were flash chromed but have been discontinued.

I recently did the same swap on my 66-1. Kept looking and finally scored the pieces on the parts for sale page here. Also seen the same for more $$$ on GB.

Thanks

Thanks for the help, everyone. Taroman, thats a beautiful 66.

Some years ago I sent a number of customers S&W hammers and triggers out for hard chrome plating.
These were parts that had been modified, such as rounding and smoothing triggers, etc.

Many of the platers offer small parts pricing for parts like hammers and triggers.
This worked very well, and there were never any fit issues due to the very thin plating layer of hard chrome.
As a bonus, the satin gray of standard hard chrome is a very close match to the S&W factory plating, only the hard chrome as done by professional platers is more rust resistant then the flash plated factory work.

Please forgive my stupidity, but is the standard hard chrome that your talking about the same as the flash chrome.
