Flat Footin'

As the weather turns to this. . .

I'm thinking of how it was just two months ago at the height of the apple season. Every October, we have an Apple Festival in nearby Woolwine sponsored by their local VFD, which features apple butter making, local musicians, and a particular kind of dancing called flat footin'. Thought y'all would like to see some photos.

I likes to flatfoot myself. The Rex Theater in Galax has a bluegrass or old time show every Friday night and there is an open area in front of the stage where the dancers gather. I've been known to go down thar myself. I guess its that Scottish and Welsh blood running through my veins.

Bullseye also got pictures of one of the finest old time groups around, the Whitetop Mountain band, from Grayson County, Virginia. Emily Spencer picks some mighty fine clawhammer banjer.

Muley, your mention of Galax and Whitetop got my attention. About every other year we'll take the camper to Grayson Highlands and take in the scenery; gosh it's beautiful there. My roots actually reach down to there; one set of grandparents moved up from Independence during the depression, the other set moved up here from Sparta just about the same time. As a matter of fact, the development I live in up here about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore was built on the old Reedy farm and the Reedy's moved up here from Troutdale about the same time as my grandparents and a lot of other folks.

I've talked to a lot of folks here in Grayson Co and Galax that have family members from Maryland. Seems that a lot of people from the mountains went to Maryland during WW II to find jobs. Some stayed; some came back. These old hills have a way of calling you back home.

We have an apple festival in September every year also, but I don't remember any dancing going on. Just lots of good food and socializing.
