I've got a 586-5 S&W revolver blue.
After a mishap, (double load of powder?) chronometer showed 1480 ft, my firing pin doesn't retract after dry fire. I also can't take out the firing pin bushing pin any more.
I assume some debris from primer went in there and has it jammed up.
When I push by hand the firing pin outward it goes back in. Only when hit from the hammer it stays out and need to be knocked back in.
Otherwise the gun is fine no other damage.
I even can fire he gun. Because due recoil the pin gets pushed back.
What can I do to take out the firing bushing pin? I do not like my stuff in such a state.
Thanks for any helpful advise

As you probably know, the spring that retracts the firing pin is very small and easy to damage. Before getting too excited about doing anything else, I would make certain this spring was not mangled by your overcharge experience.

While you have the spring out, would be a good time to ensure that the firing pin channel and the pin itself are free of any lubricant or debris.

I had a similar experience firing an empty primed case in a J-frame. Replacing the spring and cleaning up the firing pin channel restored normal operation.

I also managed to get some lubricant in that area in a separate experience which gummed up the spring. A careful cleanup and spring replacement got things back to normal.

Just a suggestion based on my own misadventures. :o

Best of luck!

OK, your 586-5 has the MIMs hammer and floating frame mounted firing pin.

With the side plate removed and the firing pin pushed back into its channel put a few drops of oil into the firing pin opening in the recoil shield. Push the firing pin back and forth to distribute the oil. Take needle nosed pliers and try to remove the firing pin retaining pin. Should be able to.

Thanks for your answers.
That's the crook. The firing pin bushing pin, or retaining pin, as called by drummer007 doesn't move anymore. Therefore can't take it out.
Tried, oil, ultrasound bath, knocking and pulling. No success.
Thanks Edgar

Sounds like you tried everything.

I don't know if there is enough room around the firing pin retaining pin, but perhaps small pin vise chuck could grasp the retaining pin ? If so, then if the chuck is tightened, it might have enough grip to enable the retaining pin to be first rotated (to break it free of whatever is holding it in) and then pulled out.

If that can't/doesn't work, I'd call S&W, explain the problem and see what they say.

We are talking about the part labeled with a number 97 in this diagram, right?

That slender pin might be bent and jammed in the frame hole that is usually a loose fit.

If so, unless you find a way to grip it very securely, you will probably not be able to exert enough force to pull it out.

This does seem like a job for the wizards at Smith and Wesson. Even they may be challenged, but they are probably your best hope.

Consistent with what you have described, the bent pin may also be binding on the firing pin itself, explaining the sluggish movement.

Best of luck, sir. Please let us know what S&W has to say.
