floating J ?

I was perusing the for sale stuff and came across and ad for a S&W 36-1 5 shot snubby. In the ad it referenced "floating J" in the serial #. What does this mean and is it a good thing or bad thing? Does anyone know more about the "floating J" As always thanks for any help you can provide.

I am guessing there is a gap between the J and the digits as often occurs with S&W serials and the seller thinks he needs to describe this.

Or he's mistaking assembly numbers for the serial and there is a J stamped above some numbers.

It means it was made between 1971 and 1972. Just a way of saying about how old it is.

Linde, I went to that thread and read your explanation of the "floating J" is excellent and explains it very well! When I got my 36-1 the SN confused me and I called Roy Jinks--his explanation was essentially the same. Your post would make a good sticky.
