Florida Problems

I have traveled the world on business for 45 years. Been to every state in the Union except for 4. There are loud people, idiots, morons and simply decrepit people everywhere. I have seen the best, and the worst, every where I go. It's not where you're from, it's who you are.

Except all the people from XXXXX. They are ALL simply awful.

This doesn't sound new. We lived in the West Palm Beach area for about a year and a half in the late 20-teens. Couldn't stand it and left. I've traveled all over the country and never experienced as high a percentage of people who were quite so certain that they were the most important person within a ten mile radius.

Oh, and it was there that I learned that the green light doesn't mean anything to me when the red light doesn't mean anything to them. Evidently, when you're important, red lights are for losers.

There were nice people there, but they seem to have been hopelessly outnumbered.

The guys who can afford houses here now want the beauty, safety and sophistication, but don’t need to buy into the old establishment.
"Oh, horror or horrors!! The newcomers don't bring tribute with the proper bowing and scraping to those of us already here. We are all doomed!"

This is an old, old, story. Back when my mother was in some kind of hospice/respite facility, there was an old lady there who remembered the town of Malvern (famous for its water) in its heyday when George Bernard Shaw held court. She had me biting my fist with silent laughter at times.

Then came the rant where I had to excuse myself because I could not contain the hysterics any more. She said something like, "But Malvern was never the same because of the War (meaning WWII). The War Office set up that dreadful place in the boy's college and brought all those ...people to the town."

It was the little pause that you could fill in for yourself that was the final straw for me. She didn't say "common", or "rude", or "not understanding the way of things" out loud, because she didn't need to. The wrinkle of disgust that crossed her face said all those things and maybe more.

I guess pointing out that the place set up at Malvern and those people went on to develop radars, ECM, and navigation aids that helped win WWII would have been bothering her with unwelcome facts.

Her unbiased view on George Bernard Shaw was short and frank. "Dreadful man, he always made his wife walk a step behind him like he was royalty".

I've been here 43+ years. Today I don't need to stand and remove my hat when "Dixie" plays on the jukebox(haven't heard it play in at least 25 years). There are jobs now that aren't construction, roping cattle or picking fruit. Sure it was better with 6 million folks back in 1980, I could shoot my 2 guns just past the dead end at the end of my street. Even with 22+ million pronouns here it was 85* today with light humidity, no sweat. Manners would be nice but rare anywhere in today's America. Like I have said here many times: Thank the Lord I ain't dying in New Jersey. Joe

Heading to Florida shortly. Ill make sure I raise some HELL.Ill tell them Im from Illinois and Wisconsin sure it will cause some confusion.!

You're gonna have to perfect the accent.

Who's the worse...the people going there or the people already there?

My family owned a motel in Madeira Beach that I managed. The northerners ("snow birds") were demanding and entitled and rude.

But I had the worst problems with born and bred Floridians.

I'd say it's a toss up.

However, both categories were pretty much the same (rude, etc) as the people I observed when I lived in Tennessee. And Kentucky. And Indiana. And Michigan. And California. And .............

First encountered NYers in Vegas.
They always knew more about everything than I did.
Even when I changed the subject,
Like, did you see that the USDA has published new Crop Rotation Guidelines? Hell Yes!
But everywhere has some local biases.
Way back in Indiana, most folks I knew were from Middle to Downstate.
And they would refer to ‘The Region.’
I finally asked exactly what is this Region?
It’s NW Indiana, Gary.

The fun thing about FLA is sifting for shark teeth with the "Florida snow shovels." We brought roaches home in our suitcases last trip to the resort. There was a nice pool side bar, and very nice beer tenders.

I'm sure Floridians would rather have some rudeness immigrate to their state than the sort of ideas that is making other states unbearable to live in.

............Now there is so much rudeness. There are contretemps over parking spaces and waitresses are crying.”
Contretemps?????? I had to look that one up. I bet whoever said that has never peed in the shower either.

Why would you print contretemps in a post if you had to look it up?
I thought Lawyers knew everything.
Well-—-maybe not.

A little off target in some ways and not in others, but . . . in my neck of the woods the saying goes "A greedy capitalist is someone who wants to build a house in the woods, whereas a concerned environmentalist is someone who already has a house in the woods " . . . .

I saw something similar posted on a local site. I moved to Florida the first time on 2002. I met with plenty of rudeness from native southerners. No one area has the monopoly on poor manners. Just because southern ladies say, "bless your heart," instead of ....you, doesn't make it any more polite.

Wife and I spent 8 days last year at Ft. Walton beach. Nicest friendliest local people we've ever met. It really was ALL around fantastic and the locals (supermarket, dining, liquor store, everywhere) made it all the better. And we brought some very happy and friendly kindness from Virginia!
We are going back twice this year too!

I once read Herman Wouk’s “Winds of War” series and the one thing I remember from the 1,301,492 pages is the description of a young Army officer as “the kind of guy who would get out of the shower to pee.”

Well done.

Come on, icebergs, MELT! Cover that big sand bar called Florida.

I’ve lived here nearly all my life, except for the last couple of years of my dads service and the six years that I was stationed in Hawaii. When we moved back to Miami when my dad retired, my parents saw the writing on the wall and began looking in Central Florida for an escape. When Orlando became unbearable and after my parents had passed, I moved down to Southwest Florida, a very idyllic place in the late 90’s. Now after 25 years, I’m feeling the same urge my parents felt wanting to leave Miami and me leaving Orlando to get the heck out of Dodge again.

Anyway, we’re looking up around the Florida Ridge between Sebring and Lake Wales…some of the highest points on the peninsula. We figure we might have some prime waterfront after the SHTF:D
