saw a meme recently. How to fold the UN flag. And they folded it like the American flag. In half lengthwise twice, then folding into the little triangle shape. Then when you finish you threw it away. Haha.

But that got me to wonder. I thought that folding method was only for the US flag. The triangle shape representing the tricorn hat that was in common use when we became a country.

So how did they fold other flags - mexican, british, italian, german, etc? Is it standard to fold all flags that way, or do they just fold them in half and then fold them in half and then fold them in half and put them on a shelf?

Let me say upfront that I do not know if there is a standard protocol for flag folding. For the 35 years that we lived in church-owned housing directly across the street from the church, we flew both the US and Christian flags.

Our flagpole was lighted so we flew 24/7, but on the occasions that I needed to take them down (replacement, turnbuckle failed, etc) I always folded the Christian flag just like the US flag. Starting from the end of the flag, the field ends up on the outside of the folded flag.

Not an answer, but perhaps a data point to add to the more knowledgeable answers sure to come here.

Just FYI...

I had a flag that was attached to an aluminum pole that I flew on the appropriate holidays. It was stored by rolling the flag around the pole. When I moved to my new home I decided to fly the flag from my front porch rail and not use the pole.

When it came time to take the flag down, I carefully folded it and somehow it came out correctly folded in the triangle shape with the field exposed. I think I must have learned that at YMCA camp back in the early 1960's and it came out correctly without me even thinking about it.
