Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter dead at 96 | Fox News

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter died with her family by her side at her home in Plains, Georgia on Sunday, according to a statement by The Carter Center. She was 96.

The wife of the 39th President of the United States died after she was admitted to hospice care on Friday...

...She is survived by her husband, her four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

...After completing high school, she enrolled in Georgia Southwestern College at Americus. In 1945, after her freshman year, she first dated Jimmy Carter, who was home from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

"She's the girl I want to marry," President Carter reportedly told his mother after his first date with Rosalynn Smith, who had grown up as a friend and neighbor of the Carter family in Plains.

The couple married in July 1946.

Married for 77 years, not many can say that. I remember her as a true humanitarian.

Rest in peace, Rosalynn.

Jimmy's waiting for his beloved wife of many years to go first is quite moving.

I remember when June Carter Cash passed away in May, 2003. Johnny Cash passed the following September. One of their family made the comment that she left first just to make sure their new residence was in order before he came up to join her./

I'm not going into him as a President, but Jimmy was a heck of a carpenter and I have no doubt he will be joining her in very short order at their new residence just as soon as she makes sure it's in order.

The former President has been in Hospice care for over 7 months now. My guess is he'll go pretty soon to be with Rosalynn again. Couples married that long, the survivor usually can't handle losing their mate.

Not only were they married for 77 years, they've been together their entire lives. He was 3 years old and she was a day old when they first saw each other. Jimmy's Mom was a Nurse who helped care for Rosalynn. They grew up living only 3 miles from each other.

There is that infamous picture of her shaking hands with John Wayne Gacy.
