What a bone head idea. The Marine Corps is dependent upon the Navy when accomplishing its operations role. The Navy feeds us at sea, provides medical and dental care 24/7 wherever Marines are, maintains the Chaplain service, moves us around the globe, supports us with it's shipborn weaponry and aircraft, and has good movies to watch on deck at night when deployed at sea.

The Corps has its own Commandant who runs the show. He is the top Devil Dog. I really don't think any Marine gives a rats butt about a letter going home if he or she dies from the Dept. of the Navy. The Corps has been part of the Navy Dept since 1853. It seems to have worked out just fine.

Next this the Congressman might propose is making the Air Force part of the Department of the Army like it was in WWII and earlier. Think of alll the stationery, manuals, mil-specs that we could redo.

Now the Coast Guard is part of the Treasury Dept. Maybe it should be part of the Navy Dept because they both have boats and ships. During wartime the CG falls under command of the Navy, so why not make it permanent.

Finally, if my Mom and Dad has received a letter from the Department of the Navy due to my death or wounds, does anyone think who the letter came from would be important to them?

I retract my opening comment using the word "bonehead." That is too kind. The Congressman's idea is (can't write it in this forum).

At least it's not silly......

... but the Marines ARE the U.S. Navy. Will it make a difference to anybody. Why not call it the U.S. Navy, Marines, Special Forces and Air Power?

It's all inclusive. I don't think anybody will be impressed and if they are, What difference would it make to anybody?

If the Navy and the Marines want to change the name, it's fine with me. Just don't ram something down their throats.

The U. S. Navy and the U. S. Marine Corps are fully separate service branches, but both are administered under the Department of the Navy, and there is good reason for that arrangement. I suspect what the good congressman really wants to do is to simply re-name the Department of the Navy to The Department of the Navy and Marine Corps with no other changes. USN and USMC would continue to exist separately as they always have. I don't see any particular benefit to re-naming the Department of the Navy. Sailors will remain sailors and Marines Marines even if there were to be such a name change. I think he is just trying to get some publicity, and I doubt anything will come of it.

Having been a member Of the USAF, I hardly feel qualified to have an opinion. Furthermore, the only opinions on this subject, I respect are the opinions of current former members of the USMC and USN.

As for the politician, better he wastes his time doing something like this that doesn't stand a chance of passing, than messing up something really important.

Now the Coast Guard is part of the Treasury Dept.

You're a bit behind the times, richard. The Coast Guard moved from Treasury to the Department of Transportation back in the 60s or 70s, I believe, and since the shakeups after 9/11 is now part of the Department of Homeland Security.

Your other points are well taken, though.

Thanks for the correction. I guess I missed that. Too busy getting shot at I was. I have to say that it is uncharacteristic for me to be so far off, but with good folks like you correcting my error, I am better off that when I made the error. Semper Fi.

This is waste of time like the Representative is a waste of DNA.

It does appear that, particularly for Congress, there are more pressing issues at hand, especially since it does not sound like the Marines are clamoring for this "upgrade".

I will give the congressman the benefit of the doubt, and yes, that photo of Miss Gruber with him does tug at the heartstrings, but as a taxpayer, I'd have serious doubts that implementing this change, at what I'm sure would be significant administrative costs, would provide any more value than an opportunity for "patriotic" posturing by members of Congress needing photo ops for their re-election campaigns.

I bet you could count on one hand the Marines who want this. "You're just a branch of the Navy" will usually get you a fist sandwich.

The Marines are a Department of the Navy - the Men's Department. :D

Is this what we pay these boneheads for? Why do we need to change anything, so he can have HIS name attached to the change. I'll bet you could take a vote in the NAVY and the CORP and get maybe 10% at best thinking this is a good idea.

I do believe Mr. Jones needs to find a "real" job and stop wasting the people's money.

In a slightly related observation. I have always wondered why the Navy needed Seals. They already had Marines.

Find a group of Marines ask which ones can swim, instant SEAL team.

I know it's not really that simple, but seriously the Navy has the Marines for combat troops, then forms another elite combat group. Seems to me the Seals should be part of the the Marines.
