We watched Forrest Gump tonight, for possibly the tenth time. I am amazed at the talent of Tom Hanks. That guy can play just about any role in the movies. The man is just good at what he does. I reckon I have seen just about all of his movies and cannot name one that I have not enjoyed. What is your favorite Tom Hanks movie?
 
Pretty much all, but.......

Road to perdition is such a different model of a movie.

Trivia, Tom Hanks decided not to play Shawshank redemption part of Andy duchene (sp).
 
I'd like to add "The Green Mile" and "Captain Phillipps" to the list, although "Forrest Gump" is also perhaps one of my favorites. I'm not sure that there was a Tom Hanks movie that I did not like, or that he did not excel as an actor.

Unlike many of his peers in Hollywood, Tom seems to have a high degree of integrity, and great moral character.

He appears to be in that unique position in which he only accepts movies for which he is imminently qualified, and for which there are ,many opportunities for character development, i.e. "Greyhound" and "Captain Phillipps".

Looking at it from a performance standpoint, Forrest Gump is easily his best acting job. However, my favorite movie with Tom Hanks in it is Saving Private Ryan. Too a many good actors giving great performances and too important a subject to not give the proper respect.




My brother and I saw Volunteers in the theater and died laughing.
 
I appreciate the fact that Tom Hanks seems to be a genuinely nice person. And he is a good actor. As far as favorites go, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Apollo 13 are pretty much a three way tie for me.

I am with you on this, but I still like Castaway, The Green Mile and The Road to Perdition. All great flicks.

"You've Got Mail" is based on the charming 1940 movie "The Shop Around The Corner" with Jimmy Stewart. There are actually scenes and lines in YGM that are identical to the earlier flick.

If you've never seen the 1940 version of this story, check it out...great cast and great acting. It comes up periodically on Turner Classic Movies, especially around the Christmas holidays. (It's set at Christmastime.)

And...count me among the many who would throw it all away for Meg Ryan... :)

One of Tom Hanks' best roles, which really displayed his versatility as an actor, was in the 1993 movie Philadelphia...he was unforgettable.

Of his recent work, my favorite is 2015's Bridge of Spies, which is a true story. It's about the 1960 U2 incident, and how the US exchanged Russian spy Rudolf Abel for CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers. Hanks is terrific as lawyer James Donovan, who engineered the swap on behalf of the US Government...

His earliest films from the mid-80’s were bad. Still trying to figure out what kind of character he played best. I think he hit his stride in the early 90’s starting with “A League of their Own.”

Does anyone remember this movie?:D

It was just after "Splash"(which I watched). But it was the first movie I really started noticing this young actor.

The diner scene in 'Road to Perdition' was shot on my wife's parent's farm outside of Yorkville, IL. It was pretty cool, but not all that glamorous. We saw Mr. Hanks from about 20 feet away but he was busy so we had to be happy with a wave and a smile. We did break bread with Jude Law in the catering tent when he was in full costume. I really wanted to see Paul Newman but he wasn't in the scene and therefore not on the set.
 
What a great career. From "Bosom Buddies" to the big time. I like most of his work, but "Saving Private Ryan Tops the list" with a second to "Green Mile". The bottom of my list would be "Joe versus the Volcano". Guilty pleasures would be "Bachelor Party" and "Splash".
