My mistake. As it turns out, that photo is NOT of my revolver. I must have been tired as I missed the Hammer Stud in the picture! Mine are marked on the barrel.

Where you mention the short barreled 1st Model, 3rd Issure, is it worth stating that the S&W barrel stampings had to be moved to the left side for lack of space in the rib? Mike #283

Wow - talk about timeliness! I just purchased a Model 1 - Second Issue from SDH (S/N: 11x,xxx) and have fallen in love with the little puppy. I have been searching the net for "history" and was excited to find this thread - outstanding! Please let us know when you article is published.
Great coincidence! Glad you liked it. As soon as I get all the suggested changes incorporated, it will go into the tank of waiting articles at The Blue Press. The editor there decides what to use and when; I have no control over that. However, when I find out when it's being printed, I'll post a note here.

Thanks, I feel better now!! Truthfully, I really don't know "Who" the Winning Bidder actually was as I downloaded the photos to my files the day the Auction was listed!! My only intent by posting the photo in the first place was to let John see the location of the Apostrophe!! If it would have turned out that you were the Winner I just wanted to let you know that!!

In regards to the Info Mike just added about the Relocated Barrel Address on the Short-Barreled 3rd Issues if you look at the photo I posted earlier of All Three Issues of #1's you'll see one of mine "Is" one of those Scarce 2 11/16" Barrel 3rd Issues!! It's the Revolver in the Bottom Lower Center of the Photo!! If you can't read it well enough I'll attach a couple close-up views to this post just in case!! I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the worlds greatest photographer, but I think they'll be good enough for you to see the Address & it's Location!! Hope they help!!

While performing mind numbing manual labor, my mind wandered, as it usually does, and (again) I wondered if it is worth mentioning that the very first 1st Model, 2nd Issue revolvers (early 11,xxx) had straight cut sideplates and almost immediately changed to the irregular shaped sideplates? They're very scarce/rare.
Also, (I told you my mind wandered) you mentioned plating and bluing but how about engraving? Both Factory and aftermarket. One of the nicer ones that I own is engraved (NY?), nickel plated and in a Gutta Percha case. Mike #283

A little more trivia about the Model 1. The patent model was made of hard wood. S&W hired a wood carver to make the model that was submitted to the patent office and the receipt for his services is in the S&W archives at the CVHM. Wooden patent models were common in the period for many gun makers, however when the Model 2 was being designed, it was the first S&W to have a metal prototype model, ( which is in my collection, hand made by D.B.Wesson). Also, the Model One, 2nd "Transition " guns, with the square cut side plates, in the early 11,000 serial range, are represented by 11 recorded serial numbers in my data base, two of which are in my collection, however there are also some Model Ones, 1st issue, such as # 11068, which are higher serial numbers than the transition 2nd issue guns, so there was an overlap of serial numbers used during the early production of the 2nd issue guns. Ed.

Thank you John for your future article. Thank you also for starting what has got to be my favorite thread ever. I just had to go to the safe and get out my two little brothers. Both have all matching numbers and and are in excellent mechanical condition. Second issue has no brass showing. Including on the sharp edges of the butt frame.
