At the gun show today. Found two more genuine S&W magazines (with the S & W stamp on the baseplate) and, to my surprise a kydex type paddle holster for the pistol.

It's the Fobus SG-21, which is listed as a holster for the Sig pistol, but the Model 39 fits just fine, and retains well.

This holster will be added to the three or four leather holsters that work for the Model 39. (Just thought other 39 owners might be interested)

Thanks for the info. Which other holster models will fit the M39?

The kydex type holsters are generally gun model specific, but many leather holsters for Glocks, Sigs, etc will work because the leather is more tolerant of various shapes. Of course, there are oodles of nylon type holsters with velcro adjustable thumb straps out there, too. Most of my holsters are open top types.

One other kydex I own is the Fobus GLB-2 for the Glock 26. It will accept the model 39 but it is not a "snatch proof" fit. (in concealed carry does that even matter?) Other kydex type holsters for the Glock 26 and Glock 19 will accept the model 39 as well. I have one cheapie kydex type holster for the Glock 26 from a small company in Phoenix that is carried inside the waistband, and it works with the model 39, also.

My point is, we are not as limited as we first think in holsters for that old gun.

Holsters for other guns with straps are unlikely to work.

There are many "vintage" Model 39 holsters offered on Evilbay. I hate to use their site but I found most of my new in the bag old stock holsters at very reasonable prices. Below is my 39-2 with a new Safariland thumb snap holster from the auction site. This is identical to the off duty set up I used when I started law enforcement back in the mid 70s.

I remember owning one of those nice holsters for my Colt Gold Cup back in my "combat match" days in the 70s.

My model 39-2 came with the box and some literature about holsters -see pic-

El Paso Saddlery will still make holsters for the model 39, including the Tom Threepersons in either strong side or cross draw configuration. I ahv a strong side for my Model 39 and a crossdraw for my Highway Patrolman.

I just found another holster for the model 39-2. It is a Bianchi professional 100 IWB size 12. It fits perfectly. :D

I just found your site while looking for holsters for my 39. Amazing. Well anyway, we are now the new guy and glad to have found my 39. I started carrying this as an off-duty in '75 as a rookie. I finally found another after all these years from an estate sale. Never fired, new in Feb. 1981. And, I am glad to have found this forum. Been away from Smith's way too long. So hello all...Doc...

OH...I found a Galco small of the back holster...and realized this is about a year old discussion...lol. Rookie mistake already...

A friend of mine is using a Sig 220 holster for his 39-2 and 639...might be another solution.

i think they are out of production now, but the Bianchi #17 is perfect.

Alien Gear makes an IWB hybrid kydex and leather holster for the Model 39. I have had mine for a couple of weeks now. Pretty decent holster for $26. You can order additional Kydex molds ($12) that fit other pistols. Easily swapped out in few minutes.
