I found this S&W rifle in a glacial river in Alaska.

Well, this certainly differs from the usual "found" thread - the ones direct from gun shops or previous owners are generally a little less rusty ;) .

Any chance of tracing the SN to its previous owner?

Is it rusted solid? I wonder if it has a live round in it? I bet it would be cool to see if you could get it back to the owner who lost it. I would send the pic to S&W and ask if there warrenty will cover this just to get a response. I bet they would fall out of there chair when they opened the picture. :)

Can we get some more pic's?

Hmm, looks like "Tippecanoe and Tyler too!" Hope that wasn't too political. Once a nice 1500, guess that must have been terribly disappointing when the boat capsized (or whatever happened to have the rifle end up in the drink). That used to be a nice rifle, would be interesting to see what soaking in Kroil and, later, working with some 4-O steel wool would do. As said earlier, If it could only talk."

Check with police?

It's probably a relic of a very unlucky hunt, but maybe it would be a good idea to check against the possibility that it was dumped after some kind of criminal misuse?

I almost feel silly suggesting that -- like I've watched too many crime shows, or something -- but it might not be a bad idea.

p.s. I can't resist saying that "that'll buff right out!" :)

It was a 270 win, I don't know if there's a round in the chamber. The barrel is plugged and the bolt is rusted solid.
I found it in 1994 and mounted it on a peice of oak. It's been hanging on my wall ever since.

Can you tell if the striker is still cocked? Is the safety in the "on" position? These things may help you determine if there is a live round in the chamber.

Found mine.....

Found mine after losing it scouting and found it during hunting season. LOL

I hope you have told AST about this as I know folks that have "lost" guns of all sorts while in the wilds here. Most have reported them to the Troopers and if you find one and are not quickly informing the authorities of this you could be in possession of a "stolen" firearm! Be careful as someone could still be looking for it! Kyle

So THAT'S how you get a stock down to the bare wood for refinishing! :D

Still loaded?

That is cool. I would really like to hear the story from the previous owner.

BTW, does the scope have a lifetime warranty :)

I agree with Zane. It's be great to know how it ended up in the drink. Can you read the serial number?
