Model 18 Smith's are hard to come by in my area. I've looked for a long time and so have my buddies.... I have found one probably early 70's, new in box unfired with all papers,box,ect........ Being it's a hard to find in my area,, new and unfired,, what would be a decent price?? Any ideas, I havent bought an older one in awhile.......tks

Yes, an unfired 18 pre-lock with box is a real collectors item. I'd say anything under $700 was a great deal, $7-800 good, and above that, well, collectors that can afford it don't really care.
I have an 18, but it is used. I don't think I would own a gun that had that much collectable value, as I don't want to worry much about shooting it. But I'm not a collector.

If it's for you to shoot for the rest of your life, and you can afford the asking price, I would consider the mint condition + box just an extra bit of good fortune. Yes, it will probably add to the asking price, but as you said, these are scarce as hen's teeth in ANY condition. I'd be all over it for $800 or less.
Getting one in new condition means you get to fire the first-ever shot from it, and there's no reason it can't stay in 99% condition if properly cared for.
Or if you really feel it's too nice to shoot, buy it anyway and trade it to somebody here for a shooter grade M18 and $$$.

There are collectors and then there are collectors. I call myself a collector of .38 caliber/.357 Magnum caliber revolvers but I shoot or will shoot every single one of them. A couple are worth 800 or more dollars but they'll still be worth real money tomorrow, regardless of whether I shoot them or not. My Model 27 Classic, 2.5" Model 19 (well, that's not at 800 bucks yet!), and my .38-44 come to mind - and I shoot all of those from time to time. That's why they're here!
