Never mind that it was third on my need list. I strolled into the LGS and they had nothing in pistol powder EXCEPT one pound of 2400. It wasn't cheap ($31 and some change) but I didn't hesitate to pick it up and make it mine. Now if I can just find some fast and medium burning stuff.:)

$31 minus $18 (normal powder price) = $13.

Hazmat is $27.

You saved yourself $14.

Not what we want to hear but still better than getting just one pound of powder on the net delivered to your door.....
and no waiting.

Bummer............... but at least there is some powder in your area.

If I pay a hazmat fee I'm going to get a LOT of powder to make it worthwhile.

Trader's World, Carolina Rod and Gun, and East Coast all carry reloading supplies, but not in the quantity that ATP does under normal conditions.

I haven't seen pistol powders in ATP for some months. Primers are starting to show up now and then. Bullets for pistol calibers have not been in stock for nearly as long. I started casting to keep me going at the range. I still have enough powder last me the rest of the year, or longer, and am good on primers for longer than that. Found a good source for lead alloy. Going to pick up another 50 - 100 lbs in the coming months while it is still available.

If I remember correctly a hazmat fee is good for 50 pounds. Hazmat fees seem to differ from place to place by a little but 50 pounds divided by $27, I've been paying $25, adds about $2 a pound to the powder cost. Unfortunately 50 pounds of powder is pushing $1000. Get some friends.

I guess I am fortunate here, powder has not been in short supply and prices have not gone up. I just picked up 8 lbs of unique for around $120. Primers are up to $35 a thousand, but are starting to get back on the shelves. Pounds of powder are still under $20 at my LGS. 22 RF is hard to find anywhere.

I need to take a trip...

You are very fortunate. I need to take a trip to Battle Creek!:) Why is there plenty of powder in some parts of the country while there is none in others? That goes for bullets and brass, too. Somebody is getting it before it ever gets to the store shelves. I mean they are making the stuff every day. Factories must ship supplies direct to hoarders or are burying it in a big hole somewhere.

I could find nothing locally, so I was able to order some Unique online. Hazmat fee doesn't make me happy, but I will finally have some powder.

Hopefully, it will last me until powder is back on shelves around here.

Cheers,

Rick

For those who are interested, I was in ATP today, and they had some Accurate #7 on the shelf. It was priced at around $30.

I was tempted to get some, since I am under a pound on powder. I checked online for loads, and they don't list much of anything for it in .38 spl. Guess I'll just hold on for a while, and hope to scarf another pound of Universal if and when it becomes available. I would be willing to try a new powder, but need one that has plenty of data for both 9 and 38.

I was able to pick up 4lbs of Titegroup for $87 and change. Not my favorite powder but it can be used in every caliber I reload and now I have plenty of powder.

Thanks.....

Let me scrape up my pennies!

Titegroup was the first powder I tried. I know, a bad first powder, but I was new to reloading.

It is actually a great powder, you just have to be careful with it. Since I load almost everything in the middle of the load data these days, I might try it again.

The only issue I have with Universal is that it won't reliably cycle the slide in my 9 at start loads. By the time I get to middle of the road loads, it cycles just fine, and accuracy is good. It also fills a 9mm case enough to prevent a double charge, unless you don't notice the powder running out of the top of the case.

With 38 spl, I can fill the case 4 times without running over, even with Universal. I have no idea how much Titegroup I could put in a .38 case. I'm not sure I want to know.

Answer: 6x 3gn throws before it overflows (hey, I was curious).

Also, despite what Hogdon says, powder position with Titegroup in a 38 makes a big difference ~20% depending on whether powder is towards the front or the back of the case.

I'm using a single stage press and was nervous about a double charge so I set a bullet immediately after expanding (Lee powder through the die), so all that left to do is seat.
