We have been meandering southwest on our annual fall journey to our digs in the Superstition foothills in Arizona for the winter.
Had been on the lookout for some shotshells for the .45 Shield and after checking on line and looking in several stores along the way.... I finally hit pay dirt this morning.

They gots plenty of Speer/ CCI shotshells in .45ACP at Nagel's gun shop in San Antonio, TX . I picked up a supply for the winter and will report on how they function in my Shield after next week when we get settled in AZ. Gotta stop again in NM to pick up our winter supply of good pecans or there ain't gonna be no pie... and that wouldn't be right.

They ain't got much in Texas ( :) ) but they DO have proper shotshells for proper EDC pistols in a proper caliber to gitRdone.

Not so fast there pardner...

Well.... I finally got around to cycling a couple shotshells through the .45 Shield this morning. Not many rattlers out this time of year and I just hadn't tried em yet.

Guess what? The Speer/ CCI shells are hanging on the ramp from two different mags. Catches the nose end of the case up front and under the ejector in back.
I'll have to take a close look at exactly what is going on and if I can cure the problem in some manner or not.

I manually fed a round and it patterned really fine and ejected OK, which ticked me off all the more ..... So close, but no cigar ..

Will update in near future. Anybody else using these shotshells in the Shield .45 with success ?? I have no issues at all with every other type ammo I've tried.

Well....

I found no obvious issues with the ejector or the barrel/ ramp fit or anything. The magazine latch had a little booger on it but it didn't seem like much.

I very lightly polished the ramp and cleaned up the mag latch thing. Put it back together and low and behold it fed just fine.

Fired just two rounds to make sure they feed and eject and declared it to function OK. I usually don't carry loaded with shotshells this time of year. I load up one mag with HSTs and leave that in the pistol, and carry another mag loaded up with same. I carry a box of shotshells in my motorcycle pannier box.
When it starts to warm up I'll carry with a couple shotshells on top.

I'm not sure exactly which thing was causing the shells to catch at the ramp, but it seems to cycle fine now so we're good to go. I didn't polish the ramp all that much. It was fairly clean to start but did have just a bit of an " edge " to it. I think it might have been the little burr on the mag latch catching on the lip of the shell case tip. Not sure....

Just getting a few shot shells to cycle is not what I would consider a reliable test, even if you are not going to depend on it for self defense. I would have to say that you need to shoot at least 4-5 boxes of them.
 
I have shot a few snakes around our place in wickenburg with .45 acp shot they do not cycle my 1911 but 9mm shot cycle great ,and you don't have shot a lot to figure it out
 
I use .45 shotshells in my XD on south Texas hog hunts for snakes.
I had no issues with trusting it after testing just a few rounds and it hasn't malfunctioned yet after a few encounters, and it usually takes more than one shot to make sure it's dead enough for me to get close.
I did shoot one once with a .45 JHP. It was coiled up and rattling at about 20 feet, took off half it's head and put 2 or 3 more holes in the body. More effective than the shot, but the skin wasn't worth much.
 
Timber rattlers are protected in Texas.

I'll be happy to run a case of shotshells through the pistol , as soon as somebody sends me a free case .....

I can hit stuff pretty well with whatever ammo, but I like shotshells for snakes and small game on the trail where I do Not want a ricochet off the rocks . Even a marked or unmarked trail is a "roadway" in many areas and it's not cool to shoot on a " road " . The DNR revenuers don't get their panties all in a bunch if ya use shotshells.

I'll get some more of these rounds through the pistol in the next month or so and see how it goes, but I expect no trouble.

We have a type of rattler in the Superstion and Tonto areas around here call Green Mojave, which get a little on the aggressive side in early spring. They blend into the short grasses under the mesquite. There is no antidote to their venom I know of, and it's a neuro-toxin like a cobra venom not like a typical diamond back or what have ya . I have seen several of these in the past few years. I've shot every one I've ever seen. They are " creepy " ....
