On my way from Arizona to Idaho on my yearly elk hunt I usually check out a few gun shops in the various little towns on my way through. Came across this one and could not pass it up.

Looks like the front sight was modified with a red-insert, the stocks were changed to smooth targets and possible a target hammer was added. As you can see the finish is pretty clean with only a slight bit of wear at the muzzle.

Based on the serial number it's most likely a 1956 production.

Great gun, thanks for the excellent photos. Enjoy.

Are the photos taken with artificial light or natural light?

Excellent find!

The only improvement I'd make, if that front sight blade height works for your loads, is to knock out the red, re-file the dovetail and install a proper shaped red insert. Pretty simple to correct. It'll look like factory again.

I use a white fabric filter photo box that is approx. 24" square and I used a pair of filter covered photo lights, one on each side of the box for lighting. Sometimes I will add a 3rd light overhead.

This setup works great for handguns, and I am working on something for long guns.

Of course Terry Popkin is the master photographer, and I will never be able to take photos of his quality, but it's fun to try.

I didn't notice at first but perhaps the Baughman sight had the red insert from the factory but was modified / filed. The stocks may be original. Non-relieved smooth targets are super nice. Great catch !

I agree that the red insert is not done to factory specs as far as the shape is concerned. And yes, the top of the sight appears to be filed down, as it's a bit shorter than my factory sight blades on my other pre-27's.

At this point I will leave it as is......as shooters we like to make the guns fit our needs, and I am sure whomever owned this one in the past made it work for him/her.

Maybe the stocks and target hammer were original.....will have to letter it someday.

Congratulations on a spectacular find

You know there is more then a few fans of the 3 1/2" barreled 357 Magnum here on the Forum

Haven't seen a 3.5 inch Pre-27 in the LGS. However, I did get the only 3.5 inch M27-2 that came in the door. That and my 25-9 are my favorite revolvers......

Eh, I keep wondering what one of these would look like on there.....
