Setting up at gunshow today I saw a 6 inch, pre-M10 38 spl. I would guess from good to very good condition. The sn: S 989xxx, which, I think puts it around 1948. It wears newer Altamont grips. What is the value of this revolver? The price is $550, which I think might be high. What are your thoughts?

To me, the Altamont grips are a detractor. It would cost another $100-150 for a period-correct set of grips, which puts it in the $700 range. I have to agree with you....too high for me.

I have a soft spot for 6 inch k frames and a pre model 10 is great classic.If I didnt have one already I'd be in.

I recently picked up a 1949 Snubbie M&P for $500, which I considered a deal, though mine also had original furniture numbered to the gun. You might have paid a tad high but not ungodly high, especially if you got what you wanted at a price you could afford.
To me any S&W revolver that is not a boat anchor is worth $500. As a purist collector the stocks would be a negative and even period correct replacements will never make the gun 100%. Since S&W has produced over 7 million of this model in different forms since its introduction, if looking for a collectible, I would pass. If looking for a shooter then as I said if in decent condition, $500 is not a lot of money these days. Probably one fill up and 6 dozen eggs. 
That's about the going rate around here. It wasn't very many years ago, like three to five, you could find a hand ejector like you're describing for $350. Those days are behind us and not coming back.
Yes. M&Ps in that serial range were shipping in March, 1948.
Technically, not a "pre-model 10," since it will still have the older long action. The 6" barrel was the least common at that time.

Actually, after a lot of debate with myself, I did buy the revolver. I have extra grips for it and do not have a six inch, so that is my excuse. I wound up paying $500, but I will eventually heal. Hope it is a good shooter.
I picked up a 6" 10-7 a few years ago in Like New but gun only. because of time difference price is irrelevant.
Wait 'til you shoot it! I was using a 146gr. LSWC/HP over WW231 at standard velocity. Some of the best handgun shooting I've ever done.

You done good. As previously stated, old Smiths cost a bunch more these days than a few years back.
I scoffed at a brand new in box 28-2, unfired except for the factory, with the cardboard and everything a few years back. They wanted a grand. For a 28? Ridiculous.....until now.

Well, today I shot the revolver. First shot hit low side of bull, next about an inch below center, next three touching clover leaf an inch highright, and pulled the last 3 inches low. TRget is 15 yds., shooting off patio rail. JSR lll nailed it. Revolver out shoots me. I'm tickled with a revolver 4 months younger than me. I cleaned it and I installed a nice set of target grips found at a gun show for $15.
Not having a 6" is one valid "excuse".

Oh this gun, no I've had this one for years, it was in the back of the safe.

I fell upon a Texas Ranger commemorative set while picking up another S&W at a local shop that I won online. He said. "I have another one here you might like. He brought it out and it was TR555. 5 is my lucky number and the number of the house that I grew up in. That started my collection of guns with multiple 5's.
It really is a sickness that can only be cured by buying more..........

I am lucky in that my Wife never pays attention to what I take out of the house or bring into the house as far a firearms go. Usually get ratted out by someone asking me a question about "my new purchase".
