They were performing "range maintenance" on a live-fire range. According to the report I read, they were not killed by weapons fire, but possibly by "unexploded ordnance".

Sad. Even in training there are risks. Prayers for the families of the dead Marines.

Wow, sorry to hear that. A local young man was burried yesterday after a training accident in Germany last week.

That is some bad news. Camp Pendleton is a HUGE place. I spent some time there in the early '60s. do you know what area this tragedy in. Mainside, Camp Las Pulgas, ITR etc?

Prayers up for the families and friends of the victims.

Very sad. They had their whole lives ahead of them.
If it was unexploded ordnance, it was probably the training area where they crawl under barbed wire while shooting live fire over you heads. That area has sections that contain explosives that are detonated during the exercise to simulate incoming artillery or mortar rounds. At least that how it was done in the 60's when I was there.

My old Alma Mater. I hate to hear about training accidents resulting in harm.
RIP Marines. Semper Fidelis.

Terrible news. Prayers for the families affected.

When my bro was stationed there in the late '60's a similar incident happened with a recruit and a drill instructor in a grenade pit.
The thoughts at the time were the recruit pulled a 'full metal jacket' on the D.I.

Sad news and a tragedy.

do you know what area this tragedy in.

News report I heard was that it was out in "Zulu Impact Area;" Live-fire arty and bombing target range, apparently.

I remember pulling range maint duty out in Twentynine Palms, while waiting for classes to be formed up. Newbs fresh out of Boot generally saw a couple or three months of delay between arriving on base and their MOS training classes starting, and were used as working parties all over the base.

Range Maint out there is probably similar, generally involved long hot rides in the back of a deuce-and-a-half out to the middle of the trackless wastes, then stacking up scattered tires & whatnot to make targets for the tankers, arty, mortarmen, and air wings to blow up later. We'd stack them in the shapes of various vehicles & such, to make for semi-realistic reactive targets.

Areas were supposed to have been swept by EOD prior to working parties arriving, but it was not uncommon for some unexploded munitions to be turned up. Even after having been carefully warned, there were some guys who couldn't resist souvenir hunting. Mortar hulls in particular were found often. 50-cal and larger slugs embedded in stuff.

It's a dangerous place to be even when everyone is being careful. No telling what's got buried & went undetected over the last 50 years.

Sad situation, no matter what happened.
