Frame difference?

On a J frame round butt revolver, is there a slight difference in grip frame shape between the older (1970's) and today's production?

If so when did the change occur?

While installing a set of laser grips, I needed to make a slight adjustment. Didn't know if it was just that set of grips.

There shouldn't be, but there is enough individual variation in grip frame dimension that one-size-fits-all grips may not.

My experience has been that there are very minute differences in the grip/frame shape. I like to use the older diamond magna grips on my J frames and, sometimes, the old grips don't fit perfect on the newer guns.

I believe that you see the correct answer above. I think that the last planned difference was in the fifties.

I don't know what year but Smith stretched the frame a bit for the magnum cylinder to be standard. I think it may have been when they started marking the barel with " +P "

Grips made specifically for the hammerless Centennial frame sometimes won't properly fit other J-frames with hammers.

I was just on Karl Nill's site. They list New style J frame round butt w/MIM parts, separately from Old J frame round butt w/o MIM parts.
Internal hammer guns are also in a different heading.

They don't provide any explanation.
