Frame Size ?

looks like they have these letters to identify the guns pictured.
no 'c' frame from either S&W or Colt to my knowledge

Check the following link, S&W did offer a C frame. Based on the article on the model 73, it was also a complete failure.

According to the SCSW, the C-frame was between a J and a K, and only used for the non-cataloged model 73. It was a 6-shot .38 special designed to compete with the Colt Detetive Special.

The following information and photo comes from SmithNut I beleive.
The first gun is an extremely scarce gun. One of only 10 remaining examples of the illusive
"C" frame - the Model 73. A 6 shot revolver that S&W was going to use to compete with the Colt Detective Special. This gun is larger than a J frame, but smaller than a K frame. The factory made several thousand, but decided against releasing these and scrapped all but 10, these are now in the hands of collectors and are a rare sighting.

The c frame would probably sell well today. I wonder why S&W gave up on them.
I am sending this thread to a friend who is retired from S&W and ask if he knows why S&W dropped the idea. I'll post his reply if he knows about it.

Here is his reply.
I saw some speculation on other forums that S&W didn't think there was much more profit to be made from small six shooters and that they stuck with their decades old tradition of five shooters. Too bad.
" I saw this gun during development. It had some issues but I can't remember what they were. "
