So as I mull over starting the journey to build a 4596 (I have a 4516 slide and parts kit, just need a complete frame), my mind naturally wonders to other ideas......

If I were to do the same in, say, 9mm or .40 S & W, what pairings would I need? A 4006 and ? A 5906 and ?

Trying to plan ahead and add the info to my notes now, instead of last minute later.

If you like the SSV (short slide version), it a matter of grabbing whatever short slide you like in that caliber.
So a 3913 or 6906 slide on a 5906
A 4013 slide on a 4006
A 4516 slide on a 4506
Show us pictures when you have them built.
I went the other way:
5906 slide on a 6906
4566 slide on a 4516
915 slide on a 3914

For my Franken-Smith project I used a 639 frame as the basis because I prefer a full metal frame rather than having the wrap around plastic grips. To me, the Gen 2 guns just seem to have done it right. It seems like I may be in the minority though, as the Gen 3 guns seem to be getting most of the love out there. Fortunately, many of the parts can interchange between them.

I am loathe to correct the infinitely talented Member Squidsix, but I don't think the 4013TSW or the 4013 single stack will mate up with the base model 4006.

A 4013TSW slide on a 4006TSW frame WILL make an interesting SSV in 40 cal.

Here are some pics of my 4596 clone - a 4516 top end on a 4506 lower. It is one of my favorite 45s of all time. I built it backwards of how you are doing it as I already had a complete 4506 and purchased the 4516 upper online (easy to do as the upper is not serialized).

One of these days I will probably get a "genuine" Lew Horton 4596, but until I do this works very well for me.

I have a 5943 SSV. It is what got me interested in the 4596, which made me think......hmmmmm......

So what would match up with a non TSW 4006 and 5906?

Base model 5906 is easy: 3913/6906 or 3914/6904 slides will fit 5906 frame.

Base model 4006 is not so easy...

S&W never sold a base model 40 compact in double stack, only TSW (different rails and barrel cam angles), so no simple way to SSV.

It’s pretty cool.

I’ve posted it before but here’s my CHPTSWSSV.

Runs great, handles/balances perfect and a bunch of acronyms.

Wouldnt a 4040pd slide fit on a 4006 frame?

That is a very good question!

I'm not completely sure I'd call one a "base" model.

But maybe not a "special edition" either?

I don't have a 4040 so I can't try.

I've heard it was built on the 3914ish frame.

But so was the 4006...

Yes.

Mine does.

John

Essentially making a 4596 tsw... that would look sharp!

If you had a spare 4563 tsw laying around you could use the slide of the 4513 and put it on the frame of the 4563 making an ultra interesting 4593 tsw
(Clarifying for those who stumble upon this thread... there is no 4596 tsw or 4593 tsw)

S&W 4556 FRAME / 4586 SLIDE & BARREL

This is a compact 4556 with a 4586 commander size upper installed by the Performance Center. They also tuned it, added XS tritium sights and refinished the stainless steel. Included a Menck recoil buffer assembly, to allow the use of +P+ and .45 Super ammunition. (replaced the stock recoil rod and spring for now)

This beautiful "Frankengun" was built for S&W forum member KurtC many years ago. He sold it in 2009 and I bought it on GB in 2013. It was advertised as a 4556 and when I reported back to the seller that it was a mixture (4556/4586), he refunded almost half what I paid making it a real bargain.

It was my favorite pistol until I picked up a new Dan Wesson 1911 Specialist.
