Free driving tip:

yep those "pylons" really irritate me too. how about the guy that wants to give his right away to someone else ,screwing up traffic patterns in the process ?

Tip #2

When traveling in any direction on any interstate. It is not acceptable to slam on your brakes to check out what's going on with the pretty blue lights. That happens to be 7 lanes of traffic away on the shoulder of the other direction of travel.

And for you rural drivers wanting to pull onto the local 2 lane highway in the middle of nowhere. That truck bearing down on you is doing 60-80mph.Don't pull out in front of it!!

It should be law that some kind of schooling be put in place for drivers to be very aware of how big, heavy, and how very hard it can be to stop. Even driving at or below the speed limit.

My favorite are the ones that pull out in front of you from their driveway on the right to go 30 feet to their neighbors house on the left. Then they must stop for Granny several hundred yards away coming at them at 15mph below the speed limit.
Mean while I'm grabbing gears, smoking the brakes, considering putin the truck in the ditch, and my sphincter is sucking cotton. All because their 4 year old is standing up in the back seat (not buckled of coarse) waving at me, and giving me the blow your horn arm pump.

In the end they never realize if I wasn't paying attention they would be dead, I have probably shortened my life by 3 months. There is a silver lining here. The 4 year old did get his wish of me blowing the horn for him and his ignorant mother.

I see Virginia has billboard sized signs saying if you aren't driving at least the speed limit to stay in the right hand lane.

You have to keep your attention to what is happening at all times.

I swear a lot of the drivers I see cut their driver's license out of the back of a box of cereal.

Missus P&R Fan always gets mad when I do this. If I'm on the Interstate and there is a car ahead of me in the left lane, and I want to pass, even if there are no other cars around I'll get behind them and flash my lights. Sometimes they get over, sometimes not.If they don't I pass on the right (which i HATE to do) and when I get beside them I give 'em the Hairy Eyeball.
I always feel better.

I like to get back in front of the left lane riders then slow them down. Sometimes they are too stupid to move to the right. Then some times they move to the right then I take off back to my previous speed.:D

I agree with the "Free Driving Tip".

In most states if you are driving in the left lane and holding up traffic you are breaking at least two laws, one states the left lane is for passing only and the other states slower traffic must keep right. If you are driving in the left lane and look in your rearview mirror and see a car, you are the "slower traffic" so move over and get out of the way.

Free driving tip - When you are driving in the left (fast) lane and everyone in the right (slow) lane is passing you, YOU ARE IN THE WRONG LANE!

My MIL does this. She claims she's doing the speed limit and there's absolutely no reason you should want to pass her.

While we're complaining, please don't pass my 18 wheeler then pull in front of me with your brakes on so that you can get to your exit. There was a 1000 foot opening BEHIND me where you could have slowed slightly and taken your exit without me having to slam on my brakes and put flat spots on all eight trailer tires.

But, you've got all of those big brake shoes on your rig. You should be able to stop on a dime. :D

P.S.
I'm a Class A licensee & a Diesel Tech.
I know exactly what you guys are talking about. :D

My daddy was a truck driver, he taught me the written law, but just as important, he stressed the un-written rules. His number one rule was very simple, "get out of the way"!

A few years back I was driving a concrete mixer. One day I driving through town behind a dump truck. I noticed a car leaving a business. They stopped I assume he looked then pull out. The dump truck ran over the front of the car with the back tires. I would imagine if the kid was a 1/2 second faster the dump truck would have hit the passenger door and killed his mother.

I'd like to think he looked, but it would be awful hard to miss the dump, mixer and 3 cars behind us. He was a new driver.

My friend divorced his first wife for this very reason. Honest!

My other big peeve is people who insist on quickly pulling out in front of me only to creep up to the speed limit over the next mile or two. All while there was NO ONE in my rear view mirror.

Here's a free general driving tip for most folks out there....It is much easier to drive safely if you pull your head out of your butt before you buckle up. Class dismissed!

Here is a something I taught my kids and passed on to a lot of their friends. "If you make someone hit their brakes you probably did something wrong!"

FWIW I have a CDL and after retiring from my pipefitter union I drove large trucks for 5 years and saw my share of stupidity on the road.

J. Rich-Hey man-maybe they were "texting," so cut them a brake!!

AND THOSE, "I'M DOIN' THE SPEED LIMIT" FOLKS don't ever seem to consider that someone has an emergency, or just needs to use the can kinda quick.

Lots of very good advice here but how about if your 18 wheels can't go more than 1 mph faster than the 18 wheels you're passing and you have to hope for a helpful grade change not slamming the door on me when I'm overtaking at a 10 to 20 MPH differential.

A quick one back for the truckers - please don't try and pass your trucker buddy who is in the right lane while on a hill...then inevitably run out of power to make the pass and drive directly beside him for five miles blocking both lanes.

Part of the problem is underpowered, governed trucks and new drivers. You shouldn't catch me doing that, as I run light and have a big engine. ;) if I can't top the hill at something close to the speed limit, I won't pass.

My stupid BIL laughed and told about him and another company truck was running together and the other truck left first and was in front but he wanted to be in front so he pulled out to pass and it took over 10 miles for him to pass but he got in front. He was laughing about the traffic back up behind him but he got in front. Even his sister (my wife) says he is stupid. Larry

My pet peeve

Is when you get over in the hammer lane to let someone on the interstate and then they match your speed and stay right beside you. I am running the speed limit bumping the govenor and can't speed up to pass. I have to slow down and let them get far enough ahead to safely pull in behind them. This usually collects several people behind me that honk and salute when I am finally able to get back over.
MKK41 you are correct that the left lane is the chosen texting lane. I guess they feel safer out there. Young and old. A couple of years ago it was almost entirely young people that I saw texting. Not any more, it is people of all ages doing it.
