Freezer

I am buying an upright freezer. Can I transport it laying down? Thank you.

The manufacturers/retailers generally say no, but I did it in a pinch and it's worked fine for 20 years. I had several hundred pounds of elk meat that I needed to keep frozen and couldn't wait for them to deliver the freezer. I left it standing upright at home for a day before plugging it in. I was told that the refrigerant needs to settle, or you can fry the compressor.

As s&wchad said - Let it stand upright for 24 hours before it is plugged in again. This will give time for the fluids to flow back to their normal positions.

As others have said leave upright for a while and it will be alright.

Another thought---there are freezers and refrigerators that are categorized as "garage models". They are built to work in the ever changing temperatures of a garage.

The main thing is the oil in the compressor, and if the unit was in cold environment it needs to warm up to room temp for the oil, mainly, and hopefully the liquid refrigerant didn't migrate into the compressor. This will cause slugging the compressor, (trying to pump liquid.) There isn't a lot of refrigerant in the system so that may not a real problem. Yeah, let it stand a day or so. If you really are in a hurry you can remove the back panel and put an air dryer to warm up the compressor and boil out any liquid. And make sure the cover is back on before starting it up. You should be okay, but err on the side of caution.

Up right for 20 minutes is fine. They ship them vertical and horizontal in the same truck. But they dont plug them in till they are sold!
