Ok, here's the deal.
Here, and on some other forums, folks have asked to be my friend.
Even after all these years on the goreweb, I'm not sure what that entails.
I've always thought it was kind of like Facebook. That everything I typed would be passed around like a Playboy in a Cub Scout pack.

So, what's the deal?
If I friend someone, am I committed to a lifetime of obligation? Are they?

Do I have to put them up when they travel? There are lots of good hotels near my house.

Do we have to exchange Christmas gifts? Hint: fruitcake is not a gift.

Do we have to talk walks on the beach together to watch the sunset? That just seems weird.

Up until now, I've kind of ignored the requests. I've probably PO'd a few people, but I just wasn't sure.

Enlighten me, please.

I've wondered much the same but have yet to receive or request one so have no idea what entails. You're posts reflect a personality that seems appealing so I guess there would be plenty of friendly interest headed your way.

I love talking and shooting the bull with anybody but I would consider them friendly acquaintances. A friend to me is almost a holy thing, right there with family which is why I can't afford that many!

I guess as far as this place goes it may be a form of validation, similar to "likes" on a post or just another way a straight male can show another that he's appreciated for nothing else than being a good guy. Either way the recipient can take it for what it's worth.

Required social obligation? Don't know. Maybe there is a secret handshake, decoder ring or secret forum area where friends can be friends or some such:D.

It allows the both of you to easily find the others posts. That's pretty much it. You must have typed something profound...

Wow. Some good answers, already.
I'll reply to a few:

7shooter, I've seen you eat. Too late.

SoFla, Sorry. I fell for that "secret handshake" deal in a bus station when I was 7. I'll have to pass on that.

VP, were you by any chance in the Silent Service?

Imashooter, profundity escapes me. It's beyond my depth.

Arjay, did you two break up?

Labworm, with a hat like that, it's no wonder. I will, however, friend you if I can come visit for three weeks next leaf peeping season. That's leaf peeping!

People should not have exotic pets if they cannot care for them and keep them captive. Released or allowed to escape into our environment with none of the usual checks of their old environments can create problems for all of us.
What do profundities look like?
They must be nocturnal and reclusive cause I've never even heard of one around here.
What do they eat? We'll bait traps. Otherwise, we'll never catch any. :D
:p:p:p

The best part of friending someone is that you get to share bank account information.

The immature Double Breasted Profunditie.
A small to medium sized nocturnal mammal usually found in the fecund undergrowth of deep caves and subway tunnels.
While wonderful and loving pets when immature, once they reach maturity, you might as well put 125 gr of lead into the base of their brainstem.
Known to eat grubs, mice, and the occasional dimwitted thesaurus.

friends, My last interweb friend took my pass word and sold it to the black web and I couldn't get signed in to this forum for a whole twenty minutes. But he was a swell got up until the point of selling my pass word. oh he did take my brothers ex wife out a few times. Last I heard they were living in New Jersey.

Better yet--if yur buying from a "friend?" tat friend will give you a 25% discount off cost of ammo and guns he's selling. :p:D

And he will give you any spare 22LR ammo he might have.......

'Cause that's what friends are for!!

Pete

Ill do that but--you have to pay my taxi fare to and fro the UPS shop I have to go to (all the way across town) with a quick stop at a Circle K-for a soda, a hotdog and a Hershey bar, then the postage, tax and such has to be repaid too. Not worth it for a .50 rd box of remingtons. :p:D

I remember you showing me your net worth and I began to cry, they were huge tears of sorrow.

By the way, when am I getting back the $20.00 I lent you 5 years ago?

This was an obvious "cry for help" by the original poster.

Boatme99... I am sorry to say that I couldn't figure out how to be your friend but I did give you a "like". Hope that helps.

My problem is with private messaging here at the forum.

I send one out, wait about a week, open it up and it says "Return To Sender"

Must be some sort of glitch in the system.

I'll try to answer your question somewhat seriously...

This is the only forum I am active on and I appreciate being welcomed in this house--I respect it.

I am not on other social media, etc. Honestly, I have no interest and don't understand it.

To me, when I like a post or 'befriend' someone on here, I acknowledge that we have similar beliefs and values and that I respect their opinion.

As they say online, your mileage may vary.

I hear You!

To me a friend is someone you can turn to in time of need or a person you can confide in. Don't get me wrong. You guys are great but I don't know you from Adam.

Therefore I never hit the friend button. BTW, I don't do Facepage or whatever it is.

I would be more inclined to if there was a "pal, bud or acquaintance" button.
