From days gone by...what do you miss most ?

We still have a fair amount of literary talent on this forum. I'm impressed with the honesty and forthrightness of the those corresponding. I miss riding in the back of my folks 1956 Pontiac station wagon. It had the evaporative air conditioner hanging in the outside of the door frame. Being called Leo's boy. Walking into a restaurant and not seeing men wearing caps while they are eating!

I miss STEWARDESSES...pretty, friendly, young STEWARDESSES....now we have "stewards" and 90 percent of the female "in flight service managers" are battle axes just hanging in until their pension kicks in.

Oh...and burkas on women in France.

Yes, its true, I still miss my ex. I quess I'm gonna have to work on my aim.

I doubt that anyone could have said it any better than Gutpile Charlie...Sad but true. First time in history that our kids and grand-kids are in danger of not having it better than those before them....What has happened to America??......Have we become that complacent?????

I think really of lot of this skepticism is overstated. Talk to some of our fine young vets who served in Iraq and took pride in our mission over there, because it was the right thing to do.

^^^^ This.

As another said... it does raise the hackles a bit when some feel the need to rail against the youth of today.... as if past generations proved themselves better?

We've been fighting for the past 10 years with a military made up of volunteer youth. Last time we fought for 10 years the stench of burning draft cards at anti-war rallies filled the air... along with burning our then president in effigy-- nice patriotic touch.

Those in their 60s (and some older) today were well defined in their youth as "Counterculture". Free love, drugs, flower children and communes-- American pride at it's finest hour. "Turn on, Tune in, Drop out" indeed.

As captains of industry and Washington have plundered this great nation and borrowed it into near backruptsy while sending millions of jobs overseas for past decades... just remember this--> The real problem is kids wearing baggy pants.

When the youth of today get their turn at the helm, my guess is that they will do better than generations past... they really don't have much choice to do otherwise.

Edit: Among other things... I miss lifting the hood on my vehicles and knowing what I'm looking at. What is all that stuff?

I miss driving Novalty:
Novalty005.jpg

She's been hibernating in my garage for several years now.

All my family members that have passed on. No one around any more.

I miss my good health. You do not realize the things that came easily to do until you get up in the morning stooped over from the back pain and take a hand full of pills just so your heart will beat correctly and not plug up when you walk down the hall.

As usual, some try to find offense where there is none offered.

No one has said ALL youth are slackers and not one word I have read in this thread denigrates today's military or especially those volunteers who serve. So climb off the high horses. I do find it interesting that in my personal experiences, when I hear someone take umbrage when these things are said, that they many times are those whose offspring and family members frequently exhibit some of the worst traits described.

There is no denying that society today as opposed to 40 or 50 years ago is filled with more spoiled, entitlement minded, rude, self centered, hooray for me, clueless loudmouths who drag down society in general. Thank God if you live in an isolated land-that-time-forgot piece of America where none of that has invaded.

I defy anyone to show me something positive in the "hip-hop" culture of today that has crossed racial boundaries that uplifts and contributes to society in general and doesn't drag down certain groups and everything associated with it by its crass, vulgar, and crude public behavior.

I remember when many of my elders voiced the same concerns about the long-haired generation of the 60's that I happened to be a part of - and you know what ? In many instances they were right and it was justified. Look at what much of that has wrought politically and socially that tears us down and hinders us. Not all of it was correct and many of us went on to turn out to be productive citizens and rise above some of the worst traits we exhibited. But much of what we suffer today as a nation came from unrestrained and unbridled animosity toward more traditional values during those times. A lot of the worst offenders now are well placed in the media and our government. You don't have to be much of a sleuth or look very far to find them . . . .

What I miss most ? Common sense in the general discourse and the propensity to call a spade a spade.

Somewhere on a different thread here it was pointed out about the disaster in japan. How there was no looting reported. When we have disasters like katrina the problems we had with looters even includeing the NOPD, are now the norm! There definetly has been changes in morals world wide!
What japan did in nanking china in 1937 and now how they behave is a huge turnaround! They turned one way, and it seems our country has turned the opposite! Think about it!
A E-mail is being passed around a day or two ago of what I am talking about. I got two of the same ones, so I assume a lot of you got them too. It is too far out to post here, but if you got it too, you know exactly what I am talking about and it`s right on!

As our national leaders speak of entitlement reform, the first words out of their mouths are "It won't apply to anyone over 55". Yet, those who are 55 and older are the ones who presided over the plundering of these entitlement revenues over past decades. Touch the entitlement programs of these self centered, hooray for me bluehairs and they will rise up out of their Medicare paid for Hoverounds and revolt.

One thing has remained constant generation after generation... when searching for something to blame... blame the youth and their music.

I miss bricks of .22lr priced under $10.

Hell of a deal to be blamed for something just because we were born in a certain time frame, aint it?
