front sight insert

Found a Pre 29 today S1721XX. It is in very nice condition no rust or pits only normal bluing wear to the end of barrel on both sides. It came with the box but no tools. I was excited to locate it locally

Only concern is the front sight insert appears to have fallen out. No damage to the front sight just the insert missing. I am looking to have it replaced to like factory. I have heard of all the DIY fixes but I was wanted this replaced back to the way it should be.

Does anyone know if S&W would do this? or have knowledge of professional gunsmith that does this?

They have kits on Brownell's so that you can do it yourself. Or check around at your local gun shop and ask. I had one installed on my old 27-2 back in the 80's. The front sight didn't have one originally and they cut the sight to make the groove for the insert and then cast the insert in the front sight blade. It took them less than an hour and I just stayed in the shop browsing while they did it. Since your front blade is already cut for the insert groove, all they have to do is cast the resin in it and let it dry.

Yes I have heard of the Brownell's kit. It might be worth me trying depending on the cost of the kit. Is the color of the kit consistent with the S&W red/orange color of the period?

I only ask because I have seen some front sights done by others that look really good but the color was either too dark red or yellow color

S&W is still making revolvers with red ramps so I am sure the company could put a new red insert in your front sight blade.
